Do you know the difference between pre-employment background checks and OIG Exclusion Screening? I'm going to assume you do, but, just in case, we are running an article this week elucidating the difference in high-level detail, but without too much legalese. Guest author Roger Shindell is a HIPAA compliance expert who has studied this law carefully. After three years, COVID-19 is still impacting the long-term health of many, especially seniors. Our AI specialist, Heather Thompson, turns her attention this week to "Long COVID's Lingering Shadow." New variants continue to arise, met by newly formulated vaccines, but the plight of those who contracted the virus three years ago and are still suffering its aftereffects today is a story everyone in healthcare needs to learn.

Two well-known software companies sent us their news this week. Axxess let us know about a new partnership that will enable the Dallas-based Home Health and Hospice EMR vendor to provide coding consulting, regulatory assistance, and help with ADR, UPIC, and RAC reviews and appeals. Gateway Home Health Coding & Consulting, LLC also has experience with Administrative Law Judges. We include a briefing on Gentiva signing up with HHAeXchange and will add to it next week after our interview with leadership in both companies.

Are you a tech expert? CMS, in partnership with Acumen , LLC and Abt Associates, Inc. have opened nominations for seats on a "Technical Expert Panel" to study post-acute care and hospice measurement sets. It sounds like this is a long-term commitment for panel members, but if you are a subject-matter expert and wish to impact the future of quality measures, scroll down to our CMS News column.
We intend to continue publishing this free service every week, but our arms are going to be tired by the end of October with all the flying we will be doing.
