Volume 11, Number 22 — September 21, 2022
Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,
Lincoln Healthcare Leadership tried something new this month, and it mostly worked. The group behind Homecare 100 hosted a similar conference but devoted it entirely to technology. There were inspiring and informative presentations from some our industry's most respected technology leaders, including Dr. Joseph Kvedar, whose keynote on Remote Patient Monitoring as the solution to the staffing crisis we feature this week.
Unlike HC100, this meeting, simply dubbed Home Care Tech, featured an exhibit hall. We spoke with most of the exhibitors and bring you highlights this week of the ones that offer technology solutions for recruiting and retention strategies. A technology conference as well-run and information packed as this one is sure to catch on, and we predict attendance will improve from year to year. Even with a light turnout this first year, most booth personnel we spoke with noted that those who did attend were high-level technology decision makers.

I sat down virtually with Sandata CEO Emmet O'Gara this week and asked him about his predictions for the next few years for our healthcare segment. In our recorded conversation, you will find him perhaps a little more relaxed and candid than a couple of his recent predecessors, but I found that made for a lively interview. Take a look for yourself and let me know if you agree. If you prefer, an audio-only version is available here.
For links to the entire series, and to our special interviews with Lindsay Doak about her analysis of the data gathered in BerryDunn's "National Healthcare at Home Best Practices Study," scroll down to this week's article headlines.
In addition to our two articles about the Home Care Tech conference highlights, be sure to open this issue's CMS News column. As Value-Based Purchasing becomes a reality, there will undoubtedly be many questions. We reprint the details of an upcoming webinar designed to answer those questions. Scroll down to open the announcement.
We hope to see you on the road this fall. My Director of Marketing and I will attend the NAHC Annual Meeting in St. Louis, October 23-25. Immediately afterward, I will catch up with newsletter sponsor AlayaCare at their user group meeting for a couple of days. I look forward to meeting all my subscribers who use one or more of their products. Looking ahead, I will be speaking about technologies for recruiting and retention at the New Mexico association's annual meeting in Albuquerque on November 3.
North Carolina's Annual Leadership Conference is coming up next week in Wilmington. For my readers in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, the Minnesota Home Care Association's annual gathering will take place at Breezy Point on October 12-14. Lastly, one of the most interesting exhibitors I met at Lincoln Healthcare Leadership's HCT conference a couple weeks ago, CareXM, will present a free webinar titled, "Bandwidth, Not Burnout: Workforce Technologies To Combat Burnout in Home-Health and Hospice." Scroll down this page to our "Upcoming Events" column for details on all of these events.
Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Time: 12:00 - 1:30 EDT
Description: In addition to routine annual payment changes, CMS proposed FY2024 Hospice Payment Rule, issued on March 31, contains valuable updates on the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP). Perhaps most notable, the rule's deep dive into utilization trends signals an intensified interest in hospice care patterns, potentially inappropriate behavior in the hospice sector, and program integrity concerns. Join two of NAHC's hospice experts as they detail proposed changes, including a new requirement that hospice certifying physicians be Medicare enrolled (or to have validly opted-out) and CMS' Requests for Information on hospice utilization and health equity, and examine their potential impact on hospice practice going forward.

Audio-Conference Description: Home care providers of all types; including home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies; remain targets of audits by various regulators, including but certainly not limited to United Program Integrity Contractors (UPICs). The results of these audits can be devastating because they may threaten the ability of providers to remain in business, especially when overpayments are extrapolated to millions of dollars. Audits of all types must be taken seriously and providers must take action to close audits as quickly as possible! The first thing providers must do is to review records requested by auditors.
- What must providers do when reviews show deficiencies in documentation?
- When and how can providers amend or supplement records prior to submission to auditors?
- Should providers send summaries to auditors along with patient records?
The purpose of this teleconference is to give providers detailed steps to follow to avoid adverse consequences of audits. Examples of common issues targeted by auditors will be provided and there will be time for questions and answers.
