Volume 10, Number 44 — August  25, 2021

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

The NMHA vaccine grant is in full swing, and your peers are signing up by the dozen. AccentCare is the first multi-state agency to participate so it and its workers and clients/patients will soon start receiving their rewards. NMHA leadership is telling me they are in discussions with many other agencies, both national and local, Medicare and Private Duty. They were surprised, though, to learn how few healthcare workers are vaccinated. Do you know who is and is not protected among your staff? Many states are requiring all healthcare workers to get the shots.

Now, through this grant, they can be financially rewarded for doing so. They may even qualify to double the amount of their reward. Imagine the applicant response when you add "generous bonus payment program" to your web site's recruiting page. Look for details in this week's lead article, "AccentCare and NAHC Partner with NMHA to Mobilize and Vaccinate Home Care Workers." (Scroll down to click on this week's headlines.) Learn how to participate and receive your financial rewards here: FlexForChecks.com

REMINDER FOR BOTH HOME CARE & HOME HEALTH

The "Healthcare at Home 2021 Best Practices and Future Insights Study," conducted by BerryDunn, is in full swing but there is still time to have your expertise recorded. Those who participate will gain exclusive access to the BerryDunn interactive portal with detailed benchmarks based on survey data. Reference our August 11 edition for full details, or click here.

HOME HEALTH NEWS - VBP ALMOST HERE

At this month's NAHC Financial Managers meeting, the single most useful and information-rich presentation was delivered by SHP's Chris Attaya and Corridor's Sue Payne. You have heard it said that Home Health Value Based Purchasing will expand from nine demonstration states to all 50 states, beginning soon. Well, it turns out that "soon" means about four months from now, but, according to Chris and Sue, that is not the whole story.

For most HHAs, 2019 was already the baseline year against which future quality score improvements will be compared. So, in a sense, VBP began while you weren't looking. I took copious notes during their excellent presentation and offer a report that summarizes the critical details you need and includes pertinent links. There are different rules for new vs. established agencies, and different cohorts against which your outcomes will be compared. They ended with some useful clinical and operational recommendations. Click on "Value Based Purchasing to Include All HHAs as of 1/1/22," below.

When your local hospital launches a "Hospital-to-Home" initiative, will you be the one providing the daily in-home care? Or will the hospital bypass your nurses with their own? Staff writer Darcey Trescone takes a deep dive into the burgeoning H2H movement and offers some ideas on how to take control rather than be bypassed. Click on "Build Relationships; Join Hospital-to-Home Initiatives."

STAFFING SERVICES MEET IN APPEALS COURT

Friend of this publication Elizabeth Hogue, Esq. has found another court case that may make some of you re-examine a few of your contracts. Two staffing agencies entered into an agreement for one to provide nurses for the other. They wound up in a lawsuit over a non-solicitation clause that one thought was fair and the other thought was unreasonable. Elizabeth explains, in plain English, what the appeals court's decision means for those with similar contracts.

VENDOR WATCH

In this week's column, we feature a video from halfway around the world. Tony Onaissi founded Lebanon Home Care in 1997 and has found great success with his Home IV service. He tells his story in person and makes a great case for the patient outcomes - not to mention profits - than can emerge from in-home IV.

We also feature the announcement that Connect America LLC, a provider of digital health and connected care for seniors and vulnerable populations, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire 100Plus, an AI-based remote patient monitoring platform.

Remember that this service comes to you for free because of the generosity of our sponsors. Please be sure to click on their graphics and see if they might be offering exactly what you need.

Have a great, healthy, vaccinated week. Keep making a difference! Sign up for the grant!

Value Based Purchasing is four months away, but experts assert it has already begun. Here are the details and tips for preparing.

Build Relationships; Join Hospital-to-Home Initiatives
Hospital-at-Home initiatives are appearing nationwide. Home Healthcare agencies would do well to create relationships and participate in local programs.

FREE WEBINAR: CMS’ Proposed Hospice FY2024 Payment Rule: Implications for Agencies and the Hospice Community

Sponsored by NAHC
Featuring: Theresa Forster, Katie Wehri

Date: April 11
Time: 12:00 - 1:30 EDT

Details and Registration

Description: In addition to routine annual payment changes, CMS proposed FY2024 Hospice Payment Rule, issued on March 31, contains valuable updates on the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP). Perhaps most notable, the rule's deep dive into utilization trends signals an intensified interest in hospice care patterns, potentially inappropriate behavior in the hospice sector, and program integrity concerns.  Join two of NAHC's hospice experts as they detail proposed changes, including a new requirement that hospice certifying physicians be Medicare enrolled (or to have validly opted-out) and CMS' Requests for Information on hospice utilization and health equity, and examine their potential impact on hospice practice going forward.

Faculty: Theresa M. Forster, NAHC VP for Hospice Policy & Programs
Katie Wehri, NAHC Director of Home Health & Hospice Regulatory Affairs

WEBINAR: Audits: What to Do

A 90-minute Lunch & Learn Audio Conference by Elizabeth E. Hogue, Esq. Health Care Attorney

Date: Thursday, April 6
Time: 1:00 - 2:30 EDT

Encore date: April 13
On-demand recording available 24/7
Option to purchase recording and handouts

Information and Registration

Audio-Conference Description: Home care providers of all types; including home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies; remain targets of audits by various regulators, including but certainly not limited to United Program Integrity Contractors (UPICs). The results of these audits can be devastating because they may threaten the ability of providers to remain in business, especially when overpayments are extrapolated to millions of dollars. Audits of all types must be taken seriously and providers must take action to close audits as quickly as possible! The first thing providers must do is to review records requested by auditors.

The purpose of this teleconference is to give providers detailed steps to follow to avoid adverse consequences of audits. Examples of common issues targeted by auditors will be provided and there will be time for questions and answers.
