Volume 12, Number 25 June  7, 2023

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Earlier this week, about 150 executives gathered near San Diego for the 1st Annual Home Care Innovation Forum. Among high-powered speakers like Bill Dombi and other attorneys, conference organizers, The Influence Group, invited a couple of unlikely keynoters. Though outsiders to our industry, they were surprisingly relevant. Taco Bell CEO Mark King opened the conference with insights he has gathered about leadership, and rap artist Darryl "DMC" McDaniels wrapped things up with his story about growing up in Brooklyn's Catholic schools and his decision to write inspirational songs instead of joining a gang.

Between those unlikely bookends, executives from the industry's largest Home Health, Hospice, and Home Care organizations gave high-level insights into Medicare Advantage, the staff shortage crisis, regulatory issues, and their views of the future of our industry. Our report this week covers an important discussion among four executives, two of which head up organizations owned by insurance companies, the other two privately owned.

Listen, Listen, Listen

A memorable moment from Mark King's talk was his story about turning around his former company, Adidas. He threw out the suggestion boxes and held monthly feedback meetings with a few dozen employees at a time. The ideas they came up with helped turn the entire company around. It is a strategy worth thinking about.

Don't miss guest author Elizabeth Hogue's report on a recent Supreme Court decision that may offer new protections against False Claim accusations.

AI in Healthcare Comes With Warnings

In this week's installment of Heather Thompson's series about AI in Healthcare at Home, we witness a "conversation" between a writer and a piece of software. In response to Heather's prompts, ChatGPT introduced, on its own, the theoretical concept of "Artificial General Intelligence," an evolution of AI that has not been invented yet. Responses included a list of ways in which AI could be misused.

Worth the Trip

Lincoln Health Leadership, the conference producers behind Home Care 100, will host "HI2," Home Care Innovation + Investment, next week in Chicago. I hope to see you there.
