Volume 12, Number 25 — May  24, 2023

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

What will the agency of the future look like? What will the employee-to-patient ratio be? What technologies will be available to make clinicians and caregivers more caring, and support staff more efficient? After some introductory articles, our new staff writer Heather Thompson begins a series this week to explore these questions and more. She will explore the emerging role of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare but focus on other technologies as well, both existing and coming. Heed her implicit warning, "AI is coming; AI is here; ignore it at your own peril."

Pharmacy Benefit Managers Under Attack

We have some important news for hospices. This week's guest author is renowned insurance executive turned whistleblower, Wendell Potter. He is following a Congressional investigation into the practices of pharmacy benefit managers. A Senate committee grilled executives from the largest PBMs and, in a rare bipartisan moment, voted 18-3 to advance a bill to increase transparency around PBMs and the insurers that own and use them. Potter reports that PBMs owned by the big three insurance companies provide more profit to the parent companies than they earn from premiums.

Marketing a Growing Home Care Agency

Speaking of the agency of the future, we were wondering how a home care agency can best continue to thrive during these competitive times. We asked marketing consultant Roger McManus to create a primer on the use of free online tools to promote your services and bolster your online reputation. The assignment starts with a detailed description of what home care agencies do wrong, and how to fix it.

Vendor Watch

In this week's column, read about personnel changes at the top for HHAeXchange. In our next issue, we will talk to the EMR and EVV company and one of their best-known customers about their recent growth, in New York and across the country.

Worth the Trip

Home Care Innovation Forum is a new conference from "The Influence Group," set for June 4-6 in Carlsbad, California. Not to be confused with Home Care Innovation and Investment Conference, a production of Lincoln Healthcare Leadership, the organizers of Home Care 100. It will take place in Chicago, June 12-14. Scroll down for details. We hope to see you at both events.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!
