Volume 9, Number 50 — May 20, 2020
Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,
Telehealth vendors are reporting that they are inundated with your calls, asking how quickly they can get set up on your services. If there is a silver lining to this dark cloud under which we are living as COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. approach the 100,000 mark, it is that home health, home care, and hospice are finally taking a serious look at remote patient monitoring. Will it continue after the pandemic settles down? We have heard that many people hope it will.
We take a look at one of those people in this week's edition. NAHC President Bill Dombi has written a letter to CMS Administrator Seema Verma outlining the value -- to payers, providers, and patients alike -- of indefinitely continuing the loosened regulations put in place to help providers cope with the pandemic. Find the NAHC letter in "NAHC Urges Permanent Flexibilities under Medicare for Use of Technology in Hospice Care Delivery."

Continuing to explore home care's newfound appreciation of telehealth, we introduce our newest sponsor this week with a must-read article. In "Private Duty Agencies Improve Care with Patient Engagement Technology", you will meet two Northern California home care agency owners who may inspire you to think outside the box like they do. One a standalone agency and the other a franchise, the two owners each deployed a patient engagement system from Independa. It is a patient reminder and communication system, but they have done so much more with it, to the benefit of their patients and their bottom line. Even the founder and CEO was impressed with their innovations, especially how it is helping them care for patients and clients during California's strict shutdown.
We interviewed another agency owner this week, this time a Medicare agency. Small and independent, it is the kind of agency many of us have been predicting cannot survive the twin storms of PDGM and COVID-19. Yet, somehow, they are thriving, winning recognition for their high patient outcomes and satisfaction scores and climbing to the top of national Google searches. Hear their remarkable story in "Colorado Company Coping with COVID."
Announcements from Homecare Homebase and Casamba lead our survey of technology vendor news this week. Catch up on news of a data analysis product for hospice providers in our report on MUSE Healthcare. In the aftermath of last November's disastrous ransomware attack, some changes are coming to Casamba. Catch up with their new CEO in this week's Vendor Watch column.
More and more associations, consultants, and tech vendors are converting their meetings to virtual events. We have been invited to participate in some of them and will use this space to keep you informed about these educational opportunities. Upcoming webinars will take us on virtual trips to Utah, New York, Tampa, and Tennessee. Always remember to scroll down to the bottom of this page for our complete list of upcoming events.
Have a healthy week. Keep making a difference!

FREE WEBINAR: Can you collect Cash faster?Sponsored by: Savii
Date: Tuesday, January 12
Time: 2:00 pm EST
With small margins in home care it has prompted the question, “Can we collect cash faster?” And what would this do for an agency? One thing we know is margins are small and have become more challenging than ever to for agencies to profit. This doesn’t mean it impossible for agencies to survive; it means a focus on collecting cash faster will be ever so important.
Agency leaders will first need to develop a timeline cadence of when to address claims based on when they were submitted for payment. In addition it will be pertinent to understand their own agency metrics such as DSO (Daily Sales Outstanding) and how they compare to industry standards.
On this webinar you will walk away with how to develop a timeline and your own DSO dashboard for benchmarking. All of these topics will weave into strategic steps to take toward collecting cash flow faster.

Option to purchase recording and handoutsInformation and Registration
Audio-Conference Description: Home care providers of all types; including home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies; remain targets of audits by various regulators, including but certainly not limited to United Program Integrity Contractors (UPICs). The results of these audits can be devastating because they may threaten the ability of providers to remain in business, especially when overpayments are extrapolated to millions of dollars. Audits of all types must be taken seriously and providers must take action to close audits as quickly as possible! The first thing providers must do is to review records requested by auditors.
- What must providers do when reviews show deficiencies in documentation?
- When and how can providers amend or supplement records prior to submission to auditors?
- Should providers send summaries to auditors along with patient records?
The purpose of this teleconference is to give providers detailed steps to follow to avoid adverse consequences of audits. Examples of common issues targeted by auditors will be provided and there will be time for questions and answers.
