Volume 12, Number 25 — May  17, 2023

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

We continue this week with our exploration of the rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence capabilities in healthcare. Staff writer Heather Thompson has been "drinking from a firehose" of information about what AI can do as those capabilities seem to expand not just daily but hourly. Her report this week brings us up to date on using AI in healthcare, especially AI's growing ability to "imagine" the future. Can it imagine yours?

This week's news starts with a warning, mostly for employers of personal care workers, but potentially for all employers. The Department of Labor has chosen eight Southern states as targets of its crackdown on wage violations. So far, they claim that 89 percent of home care agencies fail to pay overtime. Some have been fined hundreds of thousands of dollars. Scroll down to "Crackdown is Coming: Are You Paying Overtime?" to see if you are in one of those states. Tip: if a caregiver works for two or more of your locations, you must combine all hours worked to calculate your overtime responsibility. Yes, it sounds obvious, but that is what led to one of the largest penalties.

VENDOR NEWS

In one vendor interview and one new product review, we have two articles this week that will be of interest to all providers, including Hospice, Home Care, and Home Health. HHAeXchange is rapidly expanding its Partner Connect program, bringing added functionality to its customers through cooperative arrangements with 3rd-party tech companies.

A team of co-founders gave us a detailed demonstration of PocketRN, a new service that puts patients, clients, families, and caregivers in touch with nurses working from their homes at all hours. We had a few questions about how such a system might work but were generally impressed.

WORTH THE TRIP

State and national conference season is here. We do our best to post every announcement sent to us. Scroll down to see our current list of upcoming events. There are some where we hope to see you. Let me point out a couple.

Home Care Innovation Forum is a new conference from "The Influence Group," set for June 4-6 in Carlsbad, California. Not to be confused with Home Care Innovation and Investment Conference, a production of Lincoln Healthcare Leadership, the organizers of Home Care 100. It will take place in Chicago, June 12-14. Looking to the end of the month, CAHSAH is scheduled for the 22nd to 25th at the Westin Rancho Mirage Golf Resort & Spa. We hope to see you at one or more of these. In addition to the ones we will attend, look below for our Upcoming Events column, with links to the state association conference in Colorado and the Homecare Homebase annual user group meeting.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!
