Volume 10, Number 44 April  7, 2021

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

We had hoped to have written our last article about COVID-19 and the mitigation tools our industry's technology vendors have been so quick to develop. Alas, the pandemic is not over, viral mutations now outnumber the original version, and healthcare providers are anxiously waiting to hear just how much protection the various vaccine brands actually offer. The so-called "fourth wave" many areas of the country are reporting is disturbing, but it is being met by continuing innovations. We tested two of them for this week's report.

The Problem of Hybrid Meetings

As many continue to work from home and attend company meetings remotely, it is critical to ensure they are able to fully participate. The key obstacle is audio. Even the best existing solutions for the need to hear and be heard are often inadequate. In-person attendees shout into speaker phones and strain to hear the remote employee's input. We tested the "Erika" personal microphone system from Convergent Design, a Colorado company, and give it a five star recommendation. Click on "Futuristic Microphone System Makes Remote Meetings More Productive," below in our list of article headlines.

Tracking COVID, Building Data

Staff writer Darcey Trescone discovered a smart phone app, V-safe, that anyone can use for free to help build a national database of infections, vaccinations, and symptoms. V-safe supports the "Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System," co-managed by the FDA and CDC. It is easy enough for nearly anyone to use. I downloaded it and tried it myself after reading Darcey's helpful explanation of the tool itself and of the difference between passive and active surveillance. Read "COVID-19 Vaccine Safety and Patient Self-Reporting."

Mesothelioma

If you have cancer patients who may have developed their illness after having been exposed to asbestos, Medical Outreach Services from The Mesothelioma Center may provide you the support you need. We outline these services in "Mesothelioma Center Provides Medical Outreach Services for Healthcare Providers."

Other News

In our other entries this week, read about CMS training on the new Hospice Item Set Manual V3.00 and the next CMS Open Door Forum.

Our Vendor Watch column introduces major executive moves at AlayaCare and Complia Health. AlayaCare also sent us news of a new contract with a large Michigan home care provider.

Lastly, please do not forget an important announcement we mentioned last week. You are urged to participate in the National Healthcare-At-Home 2021 Best Practices and Future Insights Study:

"To help the healthcare-at-home industry both manage and provide quality outcome-driven care in the new healthcare environment, BerryDunn’s healthcare consulting division has partnered with the National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC), NAHC Forum of State Associations, National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), LeadingAge, Home Care Association of America (HCAOA), and Council of State Home Care and Hospice Associations to launch the National Healthcare at 2021 Home Best Practices and Future Insights Study. This national study is designed to provide agency leaders with clinical and operational best practices performed by leading organizations across the country."

Description: In addition to routine annual payment changes, CMS proposed FY2024 Hospice Payment Rule, issued on March 31, contains valuable updates on the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP). Perhaps most notable, the rule's deep dive into utilization trends signals an intensified interest in hospice care patterns, potentially inappropriate behavior in the hospice sector, and program integrity concerns.  Join two of NAHC's hospice experts as they detail proposed changes, including a new requirement that hospice certifying physicians be Medicare enrolled (or to have validly opted-out) and CMS' Requests for Information on hospice utilization and health equity, and examine their potential impact on hospice practice going forward.

Audio-Conference Description: Home care providers of all types; including home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies; remain targets of audits by various regulators, including but certainly not limited to United Program Integrity Contractors (UPICs). The results of these audits can be devastating because they may threaten the ability of providers to remain in business, especially when overpayments are extrapolated to millions of dollars. Audits of all types must be taken seriously and providers must take action to close audits as quickly as possible! The first thing providers must do is to review records requested by auditors.

The purpose of this teleconference is to give providers detailed steps to follow to avoid adverse consequences of audits. Examples of common issues targeted by auditors will be provided and there will be time for questions and answers.
