Volume 9, Number 50 — April 22, 2020
Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,
I am pleased to introduce you to Bill Englebrecht, this week's guest in our ongoing podcast series. Simply click on the "Listen" button above and spend 10 minutes with a 33-year home health agency owner who has decided to run for a Congressional seat in Florida District 3. After years of accompanying his state's home care association, HCAF, to Washington to educate members of Congress on the importance of home health and home care to the entire U.S. healthcare system, and feeling like he was spinning his wheels, Bill saw his representative was retiring and leaving an empty seat. I'll let him tell the rest of the story in the podcast about why he is jumping in with both feet, and to make his own appeal for your assistance.

From Florida, we head west to some exciting announcements in California. The state's effort to open up more doors for the use of telehealth systems during the pandemic coincides with a major telehealth acquisition announcement. Read our interview with Greg McCarthy, owner of private duty home care agency TheraCare in the Silicon Valley, and his spinoff EMR company, Tri-Cura, which was just acquired by remote patient monitoring firm, People Power Company.
Darcey Trescone continues her series on business planning for those who may be receiving CMS advanced payments or emergency PPP loans. The pandemic is going to bring new costs along with potential revenue losses so pay attention to the advice she brings from experts at BKD in "Business Planning Considerations and Advanced Payment Options", below.
So much has been written lately about the massive increase in the use of Zoom, and the way it has attracted hackers, we decided to explore the literature and pull together a summary report from cyber-security experts. Click on "Rethink Using Zoom for Healthcare Meetings." We included some alternative communication systems for your consideration.
Tech vendors continue to let us know what they are doing for you during this pandemic crisis. We gathered some of their announcements into this week's Vendor Watch column but a couple of others need a deeper dive and got separate headlines. Read about a new COVID-19 product in "'KanTime for Self Direction' Launched." And you must not miss our report on a new coalition of vendors, consultants, legal advisors, and others to help you care for wound patients even though you might be seeing them in person less often. Members include Netsmart, AlayaCare, and Axxess, plus AmeriWound, a telehealth company that specialize in wound care, AMT, a wound care supplies distribution company, and Swift Medical, a Canadian digital wound management and telehealth company.
Our friends at MatrixCare are offering a free webinar, "Labor Law and CARES Act Impact During COVID-19 and Beyond." Thursday, April 30 at 2:00 EDT. They describe it this way. "This home-based care specific webinar will provide an in-depth legal analysis of the latest legislative changes and the impact they have on the home health, hospice and private duty industries. During this webinar, Angelo Spinola will provide a substantive update on FFCRA, CARES Act, the 'Unemployment Dilemma,' and the stimulus package and its implications on the home care industry. In addition to these topics, we will host a Q&A session at the end, as well as provide practical next steps throughout our webinar that attendees can implement to help them navigate this pandemic." Register here.
Savii also has an excellent monthly webinar series. This report comes out a day too late for their latest one, "Marketing During a Lockout," but if you contact them, they will send you the materials. It was a good one, featuring Steve "The Hurricane" Weiss. I'll try to announce the May webinar earlier.
Have a healthy week. Keep making a difference!
Acquisition Opens Door to AI-Driven Telehealth System
California's People Power Company was already a busy remote patient monitoring provider before the COVID pandemic hit. Now, with a University grant and the acquisition of home care EMR vendor Tri-Cura, it is preparing to meet the burgeoning demand.
Business Planning Considerations and Advanced Payment Options
CMS's advanced/accelerated payment option can be a business saver but put business considerations on the front burner for planning cash flow and debt repayment.
Rethink Using Zoom for Healthcare Meetings
Your Zoom account information may have been sold. You have alternatives.

FREE WEBINAR: Can you collect Cash faster?Sponsored by: Savii
Date: Tuesday, January 12
Time: 2:00 pm EST
With small margins in home care it has prompted the question, “Can we collect cash faster?” And what would this do for an agency? One thing we know is margins are small and have become more challenging than ever to for agencies to profit. This doesn’t mean it impossible for agencies to survive; it means a focus on collecting cash faster will be ever so important.
Agency leaders will first need to develop a timeline cadence of when to address claims based on when they were submitted for payment. In addition it will be pertinent to understand their own agency metrics such as DSO (Daily Sales Outstanding) and how they compare to industry standards.
On this webinar you will walk away with how to develop a timeline and your own DSO dashboard for benchmarking. All of these topics will weave into strategic steps to take toward collecting cash flow faster.

Perhaps most notable, the rule's deep dive into utilization trends signals an intensified interest in hospice care patterns, potentially inappropriate behavior in the hospice sector, and program integrity concerns. Join two of NAHC's hospice experts as they detail proposed changes, including a new requirement that hospice certifying physicians be Medicare enrolled (or to have validly opted-out) and CMS' Requests for Information on hospice utilization and health equity, and examine their potential impact on hospice practice going forward.

Audio-Conference Description: Home care providers of all types; including home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies; remain targets of audits by various regulators, including but certainly not limited to United Program Integrity Contractors (UPICs). The results of these audits can be devastating because they may threaten the ability of providers to remain in business, especially when overpayments are extrapolated to millions of dollars. Audits of all types must be taken seriously and providers must take action to close audits as quickly as possible! The first thing providers must do is to review records requested by auditors.
- What must providers do when reviews show deficiencies in documentation?
- When and how can providers amend or supplement records prior to submission to auditors?
- Should providers send summaries to auditors along with patient records?
The purpose of this teleconference is to give providers detailed steps to follow to avoid adverse consequences of audits. Examples of common issues targeted by auditors will be provided and there will be time for questions and answers.
