Volume 10, Number 44 — March  31, 2021

BREAKING NEWS

The last week of a month is typically a bye week for us, but there are three major items that could not wait.

Casamba Sold

On Monday, March 31, post-acute software vendor Casamba LLC announced that it has been acquired by Net Health, a provider of cloud-based software for specialty medical providers. Casamba, headquartered in Agoura Hills, California, is a provider of electronic medical record (EMR) solutions for physical, speech and occupational therapy providers and, since its acquisition of Wilmington, Massachusetts-based HealthWyse, home health and hospice agencies. Net Health stated that the acquisition will expand the company's offerings linking providers across the continuum of care from hospital to home.

Casamba serves customers in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities, in outpatient clinics, and, in home health and hospice settings. The acquisition will augment Net Health's presence in post-acute care. The combined company will boast market-leading EMR and analytics products in use at over 23,000 facilities across the continuum of care, including 98% of large hospital chains and many leading skilled nursing and assisted living facilities, home health and hospice agencies, and wound care and other specialty clinics.

CMS TO SUSPEND PROCESSING CLAIMS

Anticipating possible congressional action to extend the moratorium on the 2% sequester cut to all Medicare payments, which expired Wednesday, CMS announced on March 30 that it has instructed Medicare Administrative Contractors to hold all claims with dates of service on or after April 1, 2021, for at least two weeks. It appears that means claims submitted for February and March dates of service will be processed during the suspension.

The Senate last week passed a bill that, among other health care provisions, would extend the moratorium on the 2% cut to all Medicare payments, known as sequestration, through the end of 2021, but changes the Senate made to the original House version must be confirmed by the House before the moratorium extension can be sent for the President's signature.

The House, however, is on vacation until the week of April 13. It is expected to take up the Senate-passed bill when it reconvenes. CMS says it prefers to suspend payments rather than reprocess claims to restore the 2% if necessary.

Longest-serving Technology Executive Announces Retirement (Sort-of)

Keith Crownover began his career at the company that is now Delta Health Technologies in 1983. This week, he told friends and associates that 38 years is about enough. Before he leaves, however, he will help manage a national survey in which he wants you to participate. He will also enter a new, part-time role as Senior Advisor. "After such a long, happy, and mostly successful ride...it was time!" he wrote. "I will be focusing on serving Delta's customers and our industry in my next phase with the company. A key role will be co-chairing the National Healthcare-At-Home 2021 Best Practices and Future Insights Study:

"To help the healthcare-at-home industry both manage and provide quality outcome-driven care in the new healthcare environment, BerryDunn’s healthcare consulting division has partnered with the National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC), NAHC Forum of State Associations, National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), LeadingAge, Home Care Association of America (HCAOA), and Council of State Home Care and Hospice Associations to launch the National Healthcare at 2021 Home Best Practices and Future Insights Study. This national study is designed to provide agency leaders with clinical and operational best practices performed by leading organizations across the country."

Description: In addition to routine annual payment changes, CMS proposed FY2024 Hospice Payment Rule, issued on March 31, contains valuable updates on the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP). Perhaps most notable, the rule's deep dive into utilization trends signals an intensified interest in hospice care patterns, potentially inappropriate behavior in the hospice sector, and program integrity concerns.  Join two of NAHC's hospice experts as they detail proposed changes, including a new requirement that hospice certifying physicians be Medicare enrolled (or to have validly opted-out) and CMS' Requests for Information on hospice utilization and health equity, and examine their potential impact on hospice practice going forward.

Faculty: Theresa M. Forster, NAHC VP for Hospice Policy & Programs

On-demand recording available 24/7
Option to purchase recording and handouts

Information and Registration

Audio-Conference Description: Home care providers of all types; including home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies; remain targets of audits by various regulators, including but certainly not limited to United Program Integrity Contractors (UPICs). The results of these audits can be devastating because they may threaten the ability of providers to remain in business, especially when overpayments are extrapolated to millions of dollars. Audits of all types must be taken seriously and providers must take action to close audits as quickly as possible! The first thing providers must do is to review records requested by auditors.

The purpose of this teleconference is to give providers detailed steps to follow to avoid adverse consequences of audits. Examples of common issues targeted by auditors will be provided and there will be time for questions and answers.
