Volume 11, Number 22 — March  30, 2022

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

In a week where one news item comes on like a hurricane, other announcements might be relegated to zephyr class. We will leave the analysis of UnitedHealth's purchase of the LHC Group to others, and just republish the official version from Reuters for your reference. Some of these zephyr news items are too important to be lost in the shadows of a larger headline. We bring you five of them this week.

We did get one observer's opinion of the $5.4 billion, all-cash deal though. Taking a look at the acquisition from a business exit strategy angle, retired software company founder and CEO Jeff Lewis opined, "That’s the only way out for a company their size. Companies like United probably feel the pressure to deliver comprehensive care and this helps round out the care experience."

The news recalled that it was LHC executive Bruce Greenstein who called for a boycott of Managed Care companies, to protest their practice of limiting care and paying less than the cost of care, from the stage at last month's Home Care 100 meeting. (see "Last week's most-read articles" below) We have actually had a lot of reaction to his comment and will share it with you next time.

MEDICAID GETTING MORE MONEY

AI Improves Palliative Care

Staff writer Darcey Trescone has been studying artificial intelligence in healthcare. One of her findings, revealed in her report about applying AI in palliative care, is that these algorithms have been besting trained physicians in diagnostic accuracy. Don't miss "It Is Time for Artificial Intelligence in Palliative Care."

LAW CORNER: How A Marketer Can Put A Boss in Prison

Guest author Elizabeth Hogue, Esq., explores some recent court cases where agency owners have been arrested and convicted for offering gifts to hospital discharge planners. In some cases, the arrested CEO had no idea marketers were engaging in this crime, but it did not matter. The new jump suit will be just as orange. Do you have a written policy? It might protect your money and your freedom.

PRODUCT REVIEW

We had a great interview this week with the head of Panasonic's newly revitalized healthcare division. Matt Rice told us about a new, semi-rugged Windows PC and a line of handhelds and tablets available in three screen sizes. Their effort to compete with other mobile device makers may work in your favor. See "Panasonic Returns to Healthcare with Enhanced PCs and Tablets," for device photos and our conversation with Matt.

WORTH THE TRIP

As I mentioned before, my marketing expert partner Roger McManus and I are bringing our "Recruiting and Retention" guidance to several state association meetings this year. First up, Colorado, May 4-6, with "Do They Leave Right After You Hire Them? Six Technologies to Improve Staff Retention." Our recommendations for techniques and innovative new technologies than can help you find and keep the best caregivers will close Colorado's conference that Friday. So far, we are also confirmed to appear at the Gulf States Conference in July and the New Mexico association's annual meeting in November. We will let you know when we hear from the rest. Maybe your state association is one of them.

Have a great week! Keep making a difference.

Featuring: Theresa Forster, Katie Wehri

Date: April 11
Time: 12:00 - 1:30 EDT

Details and Registration

Description: In addition to routine annual payment changes, CMS proposed FY2024 Hospice Payment Rule, issued on March 31, contains valuable updates on the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP). Perhaps most notable, the rule's deep dive into utilization trends signals an intensified interest in hospice care patterns, potentially inappropriate behavior in the hospice sector, and program integrity concerns.  Join two of NAHC's hospice experts as they detail proposed changes, including a new requirement that hospice certifying physicians be Medicare enrolled (or to have validly opted-out) and CMS' Requests for Information on hospice utilization and health equity, and examine their potential impact on hospice practice going forward.

Audio-Conference Description: Home care providers of all types; including home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies; remain targets of audits by various regulators, including but certainly not limited to United Program Integrity Contractors (UPICs). The results of these audits can be devastating because they may threaten the ability of providers to remain in business, especially when overpayments are extrapolated to millions of dollars. Audits of all types must be taken seriously and providers must take action to close audits as quickly as possible! The first thing providers must do is to review records requested by auditors.

The purpose of this teleconference is to give providers detailed steps to follow to avoid adverse consequences of audits. Examples of common issues targeted by auditors will be provided and there will be time for questions and answers.
