Volume 12, Number 39 November  8, 2023

Dear Home Care Colleague,

The Care at Home industry is abuzz with talk of the CMS final payment rule for CY 2024. We have a synopsis of the final rule with a response from NAHC President Bill Dombi and two webinars happening this afternoon (11/8) and tomorrow afternoon discussing how the final rule will impact your agency and how to plan for next year.

Today, McBee Associates presents "Home Health Final Rule: Clinical and Financial Strategies for Success in 2024" at 1:30 p.m. EST.

Tomorrow, Axxess presents "Strategic Analysis and Provider Guidance: CMS CY2024 Final Rule Cuts to Home Health" at 2 p.m. CST.

Tune in to both of these presentations to start planning now for the impact the final rule will have on your business.

Danger for Home Care Nurses

From guest author Elizabeth E. Hogue, Esq. comes a terribly tragic story of a home care nurse from Connecticut who was murdered in the home of a patient where she was providing services. This news must shock you to your core if it hasn't already. More importantly, it should inspire the need to put measures into place immediately to protect your staff members.

AI News

If you don't have enough on your plate with these Final Rule webinars, consider these two automation/AI workshops happening today:

From AutomationEdge, "Unlocking Home Care Agency Efficiency with AI" is happening today at 11 a.m. CST.

Immediately following at 12 p.m. CST is "Automating Your Compliance Process in Home Care" from AxisCare and CareAcademy.

Also from AutomationEdge, guest author Siva Juturi brings us an introductory article on steps to understanding AI and Automation before adopting it in your agency.

Physician...Heal Thyself

This week we introduce a new recurring topic for The Rowan Report. The nationwide workplace shortage in home care is reaching epidemic proportions. Finding new staff to provide the much-needed care for your customers and patients is increasingly difficult. Studies show that hiring and training a new caregiver costs roughly six to nine months of a current caregiver's salary. More than ever before, it is important to implement organizational change to support your existing caregivers. Burnout among caregivers, managers, and even agency owners hit an all-time high during the pandemic and, even though it seems to be waning, there are steps you can take to help yourself and your staff confront and avoid burnout.

Have a great week. Keep Making a Difference!

CMS Issues Final Rule for 2024 with Drastic Pay Cut
CMS issues final rule for CY 2024, and ignored most of the pleas and adjustments requested by NAHC. Bill Dombi will continue to fight on multiple fronts to reverse the final rule and permanently remove the pay cuts.

Connecticut Home Care Nurse Murdered
A home health nurse was murdered October 28, 2023 in the home of a patient where she was providing services. No suspect has been identified. Take steps now to ensure the safety of your staff.

Confronting Burnout
Caregiver Burnout is an epidemic and, worse yet, it is contagious. From NAHC breakout session: Confronting Burnout with Breakthrough Ideas, by Marcylle Combs and Stephanie Johnston, read about how you can integrate burnout prevention into your agency's standard operating procedures.

AI to Take Home Care Agencies by Storm with an Automation Whirlwind
Guest author Siva Juturi asserts that understanding AI is key to assisted automation integration and adoption. He suggests a few things you can do before you start automating your agency to fully grasp how AI and automation will impact your operating procedures.

During the 4th Quarter of 2023, web sites of the above advertisers were visited by home care and hospice executives and staff 30286 times.

Last Week's Most-Read Stories:

Milestone: Tim says, "This is NOT Goodbye"
After 30 years in Home Health and 25 years at the helm of Healthcare at Home: The Rowan Report, Tim announces he is handing the day-to-day operations to his daughter Kristin and retells the story of how he started in Home Health and his journey to what is more accurately described as "semi-retirement."

Pre-Employment Background Checks vs. OIG Exclusion Screening: Understanding the Difference
Everyone does pre-employment background checks. OIG Exclusion Screening is something quite different. It is a monthly check to prevent the continuing employment of individuals or entities excluded from federal healthcare programs. Guest writer Roger Shindell explains how to maintain legal compliance.
