Volume 8, Number 43 — November  13, 2019

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Even today, even in a non-medical home care industry that has been maturing for generations, even with a plethora of technology companies offering providers agency management, EVV, telehealth, and staff recruitment/retention systems, it is still possible to walk the exhibit floor of a home care conference and encounter new startup tech companies unveiling products identical to the many already in use. As I am putting this week's edition together while returning from one of those conferences, Decision Health's Private Duty Summit, I do not have a full summary of the startups I met there yet. Look for it next week in our November 20 issue.

One exhibit hall conversation I should summarize for you is the one I had with ClearCare's Ed Chuang. He reminded me Wednesday morning that the contracts we wrote about on October 9 were being signed that day as we spoke. ClearCare is now officially a subsidiary of Wellsky.

In this week's news: nurses

Barbara Karnes, RN, has been a hospice nurse and, later, agency administrator for her entire career, spanning more than four decades. Following the death of both of her parents within five months of each other, she took some time off and returned as a hospice educator. She focuses today on helping home health nurses, who are often thrust into the position of dealing with a patient's death and its impact on a family, to understand the natural dying process and how to help. Our interview with her was as fascinating as it was enlightening. Every home health nurse who has ever been in this position will want to read "Hospice Expert Wants Home Health Nurses to Understand Hospice."

Speaking of nurses, guest author Ann McCaughan, RN, is the CEO of Noninvasive Medical Technologies, provider of the ZOE Fluid Status Monitor. Nurses and administrators both will enjoy and learn from her personal tale of how her company's device saved her own father from an unnecessary trip to the hospital one Christmas morning. The point, of course, is that ZOE keeps a lot of heart patients out of the hospital. It is a technology worth looking into. Read "Harry's Zo Holiday."

If you have ever performed a home visit in an unsafe neighborhood, you will want to know about a new feature QliqSoft has added to its secure texting system. The new feature provides a quick, discreet means of notifying staff should a nurse need urgent assistance during a visit or while en route. Read about it in this week's Vendor Watch column.

In this week's news: administrators

The Stark Rules have been updated. We welcome guest author and home care attorney Elizabeth Hogue, Esq. to explain it to you as only a lawyer can. If you are subject to these rules, don't miss "What Home Care Providers Need to Know About New Stark Rules."

In this week's news: home telehealth

Spyglass Consulting has published a report on telehealth utilization. Principal Gregg Malkary interviewed just over 100 health system, hospital, and home healthcare clinical leadership about current and planned deployment of remote patient monitoring systems. We spoke with Mr. Malkary to learn more about his findings. See "Study: Population Health Driving Investments in Remote Patient Monitoring."

Worth the Trip

If you are in Ohio, I hope you will join me at the Ohio Conference for Home Care and Hospice technology seminar on December 12 in Columbus. I'll be delivering a message of interest to all providers, both medical and non-medical in-home care providers. The details will be posted soon at ochch.org.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Sponsored by: Savii

Date: Tuesday, January 12

Time: 2:00 pm EST

Information and Registration

With small margins in home care it has prompted the question, “Can we collect cash faster?” And what would this do for an agency? One thing we know is margins are small and have become more challenging than ever to for agencies to profit. This doesn’t mean it impossible for agencies to survive; it means a focus on collecting cash faster will be ever so important.

Agency leaders will first need to develop a timeline cadence of when to address claims based on when they were submitted for payment. In addition it will be pertinent to understand their own agency metrics such as DSO (Daily Sales Outstanding) and how they compare to industry standards.

On this webinar you will walk away with how to develop a timeline and your own DSO dashboard for benchmarking. All of these topics will weave into  strategic steps to take toward collecting cash flow faster.

Audio-Conference Description: Home care providers of all types; including home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies; remain targets of audits by various regulators, including but certainly not limited to United Program Integrity Contractors (UPICs). The results of these audits can be devastating because they may threaten the ability of providers to remain in business, especially when overpayments are extrapolated to millions of dollars. Audits of all types must be taken seriously and providers must take action to close audits as quickly as possible! The first thing providers must do is to review records requested by auditors.

The purpose of this teleconference is to give providers detailed steps to follow to avoid adverse consequences of audits. Examples of common issues targeted by auditors will be provided and there will be time for questions and answers.
