Volume 12, Number 36 — October  4, 2023

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

We have a lot to share with you over the next two weeks before we leave for the NAHC Annual Convention. Will we see you there? From the D.C. area, we will be heading to Chicago the following week for the HCAOA National Home Care Conference. The Rowan Report may be published a day or two later than normal those weeks, as we bring you the latest news and information from the two largest national conferences of the year. If you plan to attend either or both, please say hello. We will be bringing an important announcement about the future of The Rowan Report that we are keeping under our hats until then.

Before we begin our weekly news summary, please join me in welcoming our newest sponsor: Select Data. We will be telling you much more about the new OASIS and coding accuracy system the Anaheim, California company has just released, but for now we give them a moment to introduce themselves:

"Discover SmartCare™, the transformative, AI-powered interface revolutionizing post-acute care by refocusing efforts on patient care. By highlighting key clinical components in documentation, SmartCare™ facilitates quicker absorption of vital information, promising a seamless, efficient healthcare future. Join us in this transformation, as we pave the path towards a healthcare future marked by streamlined operations and improved accuracy, a future grounded in the well-being of individual patients. Become a strategic partner and share your testimonials as we shape a holistic approach to patient care together."

Select Data will be the official sponsor of our ongoing AI reports. We will be describing their revolutionary AI system in coming weeks. Until then, read about the Select Data strategic partner program by clicking their ad below or stop by and see them in booth #1025 in the NAHC exhibit hall.

Speaking of sponsors, if you are headed to DC for the NAHC conference, take some time to visit our longtime featured sponsor, Homecare Homebase:

"Streamlining your workflow, compliance, and scheduling is just a few steps away! Visit Homecare Homebase at booth 613 to see how our cutting-edge technology is revolutionizing home health care."

IN THIS WEEK'S NEWS

After the volume of interest in last week's article about OIG Exclusions, we follow up with guest author Roger Shindell's detailed study of exclusion screening, a mandatory activity for healthcare providers participating in government payer programs. If that is you, you will want to read his explanation of who must be screened and why screening is important.

Medicaid contractors, their case managers, and their patient advocates in Colorado are at their wits end -- many at career end -- over what they describe as a premature implementation of a software system that manages patient eligibility and provider payments. Nearly every user of the system insists it should have stayed in beta testing for many more months. One advocate knows of only one patient out of hundreds who has not had an improper break in Medicaid eligibility since July 5. We got inside the heart of the controversy that some say is damaging patients, leaving home care providers unpaid, and causing many advocates to seek other jobs.

How about you? Are you thinking of changing careers too? Selling a home care business is not as simple as it might sound. Guest author Greg Schriber offers tips to prepare your business, and yourself, for the process.

In this week's AI update, we examine a recent minor controversy around OpenAI's ChatGPT. We explain why it was temporarily limited to providing answers only based on old Internet data, which apparently led to the now-legendary "AI hallucinations."

WORTH THE TRIP

We will be looking for you in DC and Chicago, with news of our own. Scroll down for information about meetings and events planned by Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Virginia, and Texas.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Office of Inspector General (OIG) exclusion screening is a crucial regulatory mandate aimed at ensuring the integrity of healthcare programs and preventing participation by individuals or entities with a history of healthcare-related offenses.

When Software Kills
When Colorado Medicaid implemented a new patient management system before it was ready, patients started having their authorizations denied, which led to tragedies.

ChatGPT Integrates with Bing
For a brief time, ChatGPT from OpenAI was unable to use available Internet information newer than September, 2021. That has been resolved and the competition for your AI dollars between OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft has resumed. Are they all ready for Home Care yet? We give it a solid 'maybe.'

Upcoming Events

I've been surfing online more than 3 hours these days, but I never discovered any attention-grabbing article like yours. It is lovely value enough for me. In my opinion, if all site owners and bloggers made just right content material as you probably did, the internet will be a lot more useful than ever before.
