Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Eventful week! Happy Halloween! Happy All Saints Day! Feliz Dia de Los Muertos! Go Braves! Good Luck Astros!

On to this week's news. Are you an experienced home care software sales person with a deep rolodex and knowledge of the industry? Click here to read the job description of an open position that may have your name on it. Reminder: this job description is one of many White Papers and special announcements from our sponsors, published on our home page as a service to our readers. We are peeved just a tad

I do not write opinion pieces very often but this week I couldn't help it. There is a national movement to extend nursing care to the home after discharge using only hospital nurses, bypassing VNAs and home healthcare agencies and their 120 years of experience. Look into my blog on the subject in "Pamphlet Promotes A Way for Hospitals to Compete with Home Health," by clicking below.

Staff recruiting tips

Staff writer Darcey Trescone spent some time with the CEO of Hireology and brings us the next in her series of articles that explore the right and wrong ways to recruit and retain quality caregivers and clinicians. Do not miss Darcey's interview with Adam Robinson, "Recruitment: It May Be Time to Change Your Approach."

Consolidation is a runaway bullet train

One large New England private duty company has acquired another. Be sure to read our interview with Michael Trigilio, CEO of HouseWorks, about his company's acquisition of Atlantic Homelife Senior Care, the third major acquisition since his arrival at HouseWorks from Amedisys only last April.

Hospice Regulatory Webinar: In our CMS News column, we have the syllabus and registration information for an important NAHC webinar about new hospice HQRP rules. It is important because calendar Year 2021 submissions for both the Hospice Item Set (HIS) and the CAHPS Hospice Survey (CAHPS) impact Fiscal Year 2023 Hospice payment update. Click below on "CMS News" for registration details.

Telehealth News

The American Telemedicine Association sent us the details of their new initiative, the "ATA CEO's Advisory Group," an advisory board of global healthcare leaders working on strategic approaches to reduce healthcare equality disparities based on latest advances in telehealth services and technologies.

Worth the trip

The 2021 Leadership Conference of the Association for Home & Hospice Care of North Carolina will take place in Wrightsville Beach on November 8-9. Scroll down for the details on this conference and others, including a free webinar by Healthcare Synergy, featuring Michael Tidd, COS-C, HCS-D, "Targeted Probe and Educate: Where Do You Stand?" Planning ahead, Healthcare Synergy also has a webinar on the 2022 Final Rule, set for December 2. After that, it is full speed ahead to the warm winter days of Scottsdale for Homecare 100 2022, February 6-9.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Description: In addition to routine annual payment changes, CMS proposed FY2024 Hospice Payment Rule, issued on March 31, contains valuable updates on the Hospice Quality Reporting Program (HQRP). Perhaps most notable, the rule's deep dive into utilization trends signals an intensified interest in hospice care patterns, potentially inappropriate behavior in the hospice sector, and program integrity concerns.  Join two of NAHC's hospice experts as they detail proposed changes, including a new requirement that hospice certifying physicians be Medicare enrolled (or to have validly opted-out) and CMS' Requests for Information on hospice utilization and health equity, and examine their potential impact on hospice practice going forward.

Audio-Conference Description: Home care providers of all types; including home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies; remain targets of audits by various regulators, including but certainly not limited to United Program Integrity Contractors (UPICs). The results of these audits can be devastating because they may threaten the ability of providers to remain in business, especially when overpayments are extrapolated to millions of dollars. Audits of all types must be taken seriously and providers must take action to close audits as quickly as possible! The first thing providers must do is to review records requested by auditors.

The purpose of this teleconference is to give providers detailed steps to follow to avoid adverse consequences of audits. Examples of common issues targeted by auditors will be provided and there will be time for questions and answers.
