Volume 12, Number 36 — October 11, 2023
Dear Home Care Colleague,
We will not have an exhibit hall booth next week at the NAHC Conference, but we do want to meet as many subscribers and advertisers as we can, so we can share our own big news with you. Kristin and I will be covering a lot of ground, at the general sessions, the exhibit hall, and of course at all of the happy hours and dinners we get invited to. We hope to see you there and wish you safe travels.
Kaiser Family Foundation, now known simply as KFF, brought us this week's top news stories. The offenses of insurance companies in the Medicare Advantage program keep piling up and we could not ignore it. Both improper means to pad revenue and deny care are involved in the accusations. We learned about the practice of blasting daytime and late-night TV with deceptive advertising and about CMS findings that most of these companies pad diagnostic codes to collect millions in overpayments, while improperly denying care that straight Medicare would approve. This news only reinforces the article by Wendell Potter we published back in February of this year, "Medicare Advantage is Neither Medicare Nor an Advantage."
Thanks to our volunteer news gathering service provider, Tom Boyd, we also learned that hospitals are beginning to say no to the care-denying, slow-paying MA plans. As more and more Home Health leaders recommend you do the same thing, we will keep an eye on this segment of the healthcare payer business. Update your awareness of all these problems in two news articles this week. Scroll down and click on "Brace Yourself! Joe Namath and Jimmy Walker Season Is Back," and then "More MA Plans Caught Inflating Patient Assessments."

Be Informed Before You Buy
Adopting healthcare technologies is costly and time-consuming, but often promises improved health for patients and lower costs for agencies. Read about how the Peterson Health Technology Institute aims to improve the information about the efficacy and performance of digital health tools.
Product Reviews and Vendor Watch
This week, we review two new products that came to our attention and share a partner announcement. Scroll down to read about a 24/7 call center that reduces some of the scheduling management headaches from agency managers, an education and reporting system that automates costly compliance and quality assurance tasks, and the press release synopsis from Axxess and Sulos.
We Are Worth the Trip. Will We See You Next Week?
As mentioned, Kristin and I will attend the annual NAHC Convention and Expo next week. Kristin will arrive early and be at the H3IT pre-conference all day Saturday for the International Conference on Home Healthcare, Hospice, and Information Technology. We did a preview and have some educational sessions to recommend in one of this week's articles below, particularly the Tuesday General Session at 9:00 a.m. in Room: Potomac AB. After a couple days home, we will head to Chicago October 22-24 for the HCAOA event. If we miss you in DC, maybe we'll see you on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Just a reminder that The Rowan Report has an announcement of its own coming soon. Be among the first to know by tracking us down on the expo floor to pick up our announcement flyer.
Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Medicare open enrollment begins October 15. Prepare for 700,000 TV and direct mail messages from Captain Kirk, Joe Namath, J.J. Walker, and ex-governor Mike Huckabee.
More MA Plans Caught Inflating Patient Assessments
CMS and the HHS OIG continuously uncover upcoding by Medicare Advantage companies. But they keep upcoding. Apparently, CMS fines are not high enough to be a deterrent. Hospitals are finally saying "no, thank you."
Peterson Center on Healthcare Launches Institute to Evaluate Digital Health Technologies
Remote Patient Monitoring for diabetes will be the first category Peterson Health Technology Institute will analyze for its clinical benefits and economic impact.

I've been surfing online more than 3 hours these days, but I never discovered any attention-grabbing article like yours. It is lovely value enough for me. In my opinion, if all site owners and bloggers made just right content material as you probably did, the internet will be a lot more useful than ever before.
