Volume 9, Number 23 — May  6, 2020

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Mother's Day is this Sunday. For some, it will be a day of cards and flowers and breakfast in bed. For others, only fond memories. Personally, I am still not used to the idea of not having anyone to buy a Mother's Day card for anymore, but each year gets easier. To mark the occasion, no matter in which of these categories you find yourself this year, we are featuring a guest author with a lesson to offer. Based on her experience with two deaths, one that resulted in a nightmare of estate cleanup and paperwork because there was no pre-planning, another that flowed much more easily, thanks to careful planning.

In this profession, you may be skilled at comforting grieving families. But do you ever stick around long enough to know about all the work that follows a funeral? Perhaps you have experienced it personally. Either way, this week's guest author speaks out of experience and has some serious advice for all of us.

COVID-19 Updates

The National Association for Home Care and Hospice conducted a survey to find out how its members are faring during this pandemic. They gave us permission to print the entire results. You may see yourself reflected. Click below on "NAHC Study Shows Home Health Care is in Fragile State."

Home care attorney Elizabeth Hogue offers some legal advice about dealing with Assisted Living Facilities that block home care workers from entering their premises to care for their residents, claiming virus patient safety is more important than patient medical care. Read Elizabeth's article by clicking on "Access to Residents of Assisted Living Facilities."

One of our sponsors, AlayaCare, has released a new patient and family portal. The private duty software company told us the enhanced communication system should give both patients and families more peace of mind. Read more under "AlayaCare Releases Family Portal."

This week's Vendor Watch feature is packed with news. Click on the VW headline below to read announcements from Partners in Care, CareConnect, Axxess, Hospice Pharmacy Solutions, QliqSOFT, Wolters Kluwer, Sandata, and Libman Education.

Worth the Virtual Trip

I was supposed to be the keynote speaker at the Utah state association's annual meeting this month. Instead, I'll record me talk. I'm sorry to miss you, Utah. Maybe next year. I hope you enjoy and benefit from my presentation, "New Technologies You've Never Heard of But Desperately Need."

Every state an national association is doing the same thing. We will post details of as many as we can find. Scroll down to see if a topic you need fits your schedule. If you have not signed up for Michael Ferris' sales training course – now two online experiences, one for home health, one for hospice – it is not too late as events have forced it to be delayed two weeks. Scroll down for details. Sign up your entire sales team.

Have a healthy and safe week. Keep making a difference!

A Sign of Mother's Love: Easing Her Adult Child's Experience - A Tale of Two Deaths
Death has surrounded all of us for most of this year, more than even healthcare workers have grown accustomed to. It may cause one to consider one's own mortality. Perhaps appropriately for this Mother's Day more than others, guest author Karen Rowan, who is a daughter, step-daughter, granddaughter, mother, sister, and step-sister, draws on personal experience to ask if you, while considering your own mortality, have considered the impact of your departure on those who must close your accounts, find your passwords, and pay your final bills. In other words, is being prepared an act of love?

NAHC Study Shows Home Health Care is in Fragile State
The National Association for Home Care and Hospice surveyed providers to assess clinical and financial changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Access to Residents of Assisted Living Facilities
