Volume 10, Number 33 May  5, 2021

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

By now, everyone has heard about Humana's acquisition of the remaining 60% of Kindred at Home, but what does it mean? I offer my take on the message behind the move in my "Tim's Blog" opinion piece this week. Spoiler alert: commercial payors have learned that home health and home care save them money. Now we just have to hope public payors learn the same lesson.

Speaking of acquisitions, we also heard right before releasing this week's issue that Royal Philips has sold off its PERS division. Connect America will close in a few weeks on the acquisition of Lifeline, the medical alert system Philips acquired in 2006. We spoke with CEO Janet Dillione to get the inside story.

This seems to be the month for new alliances. In addition to these two acquisitions, we have news of two significant partnerships as well. Homecare Homebase is going to be working with Addus HomeCare and CellTrak to adapt its Medicare-centric EMR for Medicaid and personal care providers. Addus will detail its functionality needs; Homecare Homebase will do the software development.

The National Minority Health Association has partnered with online education company Nevvon to create a professional certification in dementia care for caregivers.

President Biden nominated his choice for CMS Administrator in February. Chiquita Brooks-LaSure is still waiting for Senate confirmation. Staff writer Darcey Trescone takes a detailed look into the nominee's career to find out what kind of administrator she might be.

Worth the Trip

We are excited about the gradual return of live conferences. Homecare100, Marcus Island, Florida, June 27-30. NAHC Financial Managers in Chicago, August 1-3. Home Care Association of America, Orlando, September 26-27. NAHC Annual Meeting, New Orleans, October 3-5. I hope to see you at one or more of these. Several state associations want to see your face later this year as well. Live conferences are planned in Florida, Utah, Colorado, and others. For the more adventurous, HIMSS goes live -- with a digital backup -- in Las Vegas in August (9-13).

Have a great week. Stay healthy and keep making a difference!
