Volume 10, Number 33 May  26, 2021

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

There may be a scandal brewing. Without making any specific accusations, but clearly with an accusatory glance in a specific direction, the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology has issued an interim final rule under the Cures Act designed to stop EHR vendors and health systems from interfering with patient data exchange. Two recent surveys of Health Information Exchange operators revealed that both software vendors and their customers have been practicing "information blocking" in order to surreptitiously preserve a competitive advantage. The practice negatively impacts every category of post-acute care provider. Staff writer Darcey Trescone explores the meaning of the survey's findings in this week's lead article, below.

We also sent Darcey to look into the winners of the CMS Artificial Intelligence (AI) Health Outcomes Challenge, which were announced in a press release late last month. AI may seem a distant concern from your day-to-day patient care and business management challenges, but its reality will invade your awareness sooner than you might expect. We will keep an eye on it for you. Scroll down to read Darcey's report.

Speaking of your daily challenges, the aftermath of the pandemic will be with us long after the last American is vaccinated. Everyone has a story, whether about success or struggle, and we are happy to share them when you send them to us. This week, an international focus. Guest author Tony Onaissi, owner of a home health and home infusion company in Lebanon, describes his team's creative response to the problem of frightened patients slamming the door in the face of their home health nurses.

There is more than one milestone announcement in our Vendor Watch category this week. Simione Healthcare Consultants and BlackTree Healthcare Consulting have merged. Read about the new company, aptly named "SimiTree," by clicking on the headline below.

Short of a merger, a partnership has been formed between AxisCare and CareConnect®. Users will be able to access credit card and ACH payments from within the AxisCare EMR and scheduling application.
