Volume 10, Number 44 March  24, 2021

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Our monthly "Meet the CEO" series continues in this issue with a conversation with Savii Chief Executive and Chief Technology Officer Ashley Wharton. We were joined by Senior Director of Business Development, Jenna Schwartz. We talked about many of the problems facing private duty home care today: staffing, interoperability, care coordination, competition, and more. I promise an informative 30 minutes.

In This Week's News

IBM and McAfee have issued warnings about renewed cyber attacks that target healthcare providers. Taking advantage of the world's focus on COVID, the attackers have gone beyond ransomware. Now they not only lock up your data and demand ransom, but they also threaten to release it to the public. We offer some of IBM's defensive suggestions in "Cyber Security Threats to Healthcare Growing Stronger."

Home care attorney Elizabeth Hogue offers a guest essay about the need to be prudent when using liaisons and care coordinators. Some regulators may see too much assistance to hospital discharge planners as an illegal kickback. Elizabeth's advice is found in "Fraud and Abuse in the Form of Free Discharge Planning Services."

We were intrigued when we read about WellSky's acquisition of CarePort Health, so we interviewed CEO Dr. Lissy Hu. Her rise from medical school student to CEO is as interesting as her description of her software platform that coordinates patient care transitions. Meet Dr. Hu in "WellSky Acquires CarePort Health."

Guest author Cheryl Petelkis brings her longtime sales training experience to bear with an explanation of the importance of grit in home care sales. See "Why Does A Student with an Average IQ Still Get an A?"

Lastly, I take a look at the way CMS responded to the pandemic by loosening telemedicine reimbursement rules for physicians only and offer an opinion on why the agency's ongoing regard of home health as costly and untrustworthy is illogical and inconsistent. My opinion piece is called "CMS's Reason for Not Reimbursing for Telehealth Does Not Hold Water."

Little by little, live conferences are coming back. This week, we heard that the NAHC Financial Managers meeting will take place August 1-3 in Chicago, and the Colorado home care association is shooting for October. And of course we told you before that Homecare 100 is scheduled for the end of June in Miami. Things are looking up. If you know of other in-person events, please let us know. For myself, I am looking forward to getting my second vaccination shot this weekend.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Cyber Security Threats to Healthcare Growing Stronger
For the CIO and SysOp: Cybercrime, especially ransomware attacks, grew exponentially during the pandemic and are predicted to continue. Here are some defensive recommendations from IBM's "X-Force" cybersecurity division.

Fraud and Abuse in the Form of Free Discharge Planning Services
When coordinators and liaisons perform services that discharge planners are supposed to perform, enforcers may view these services as kickbacks to referral sources in the form of free discharge planning services. Guest author Elizabeth Hogue, Esq. tells you how to avoid suspicion of wrongdoing.

CMS's Reason for Not Reimbursing for Telehealth Does Not Hold Water
Opinion: When it comes to gaming the Medicare payment system, HHAs are amateurs compared to physicians and hospitals.

Why Does A Student with an Average IQ Still Get an A?
Sales stars are made, trained, nurtured, and rewarded, not born. Guest writer Cheryl Peltekis explains the difference.

WellSky Acquires CarePort Health
Latest WellSky acquisition positions the company to specialize in care coordination. We interview CEO Dr. Lissy Hu, who created CarePort while still in medical school.

During the 4th Quarter of 2021, web sites of the above advertisers were visited by home care and hospice executives and staff 7631 times.
