Volume 10, Number 44 — March 17, 2021
Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,
Every year, around the ides of March, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission publishes an annual Report to Congress, with its recommendations for the next fiscal year. Commissioners almost always recommend payment increases for hospitals and doctors and decreases for home health and hospice.
Congress, on the other hand, almost always ignores MedPAC's recommendations, provided it hears from enough constituents. This year's report was just released, and it follows established tradition. Whether Congress will also follow tradition is up to you and your state and local association lobbyists. After reading the analyses by the four experts we heard from, pick a choice sentence or two and relay them to your Representative and Senators. (Try to pick the ones without the swear words.)

A home care agency owner recently complained about all the leftover donuts when all 12 new hires failed to show up for initial caregiver training. Another told the first owner to be grateful. Her problem is even more expensive: the ones who go through orientation and training and never take a shift. We have seen estimates these people cost you over $4,000 each. Ouch!
If you would like to hear about a science-based tool that can help you avoid a number of these $4,000 losses, please join me Thursday when I interview the CEO of the company that developed and patented it. Preview: one avoided bad hire will pay for a year of using the tool; early adopters have avoided many more than just one.
