Other news pushed our planned follow-up story on the discussions at last month's Homecare 100 off the front page this week but I wanted to pass along two comments from one of the sessions that frankly left me, a perennial optimist, a little down.

According to Rose Madden-Baer of the VNS of New York, in a session on strategies for partnering with Manage Care Organizations, it takes a year or more to get a contract with an MCO. "Sometimes it is like dating," she said. "Sometimes you have to be willing to walk away, to say 'no, we won't do it for that amount.'" David Ellis, the session's moderator and president of meeting host Lincoln Healthcare Leadership, surveyed in advance a number of those MCOs Madden-Baer mentioned, asking for their impressions of home care and home health. He revealed their comments on a slide that was met with gasps by the audience. (If you are easily disturbed, you may want to skip this section.)

Don't shoot the messenger, neither Dave nor me. By the way, the next Lincoln conference is a bit later in the summer this year. Senior Living 360, your opportunity to mingle with other post-acute providers, is set for the Gaylord Resort just outside DC, August 10-12.

There will be discussions between Congress and the White House through the upcoming budget negotiations season about cuts to Medicare and Social Security. We will keep an eye on it for you. They may be getting there this year, after showing a prototype at CES and planning a big splash at HIMSS.
