Volume 9, Number 50 — November  18, 2020

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Another packed issue this week, with helpful news and analysis for providers of every type. I'll summarize the news in a moment, but first I must thank everyone who wrote to me after last week's issue. I explained that we try to keep our news articles non-partisan and to make it clear if we are writing an opinion piece. This has been important to us especially during the recently concluded election season. This is why I explained last week that we have recently had to strip out unnecessary, campaign-style, political language before we reprint CMS announcements. Those who regularly read those CMS news releases wrote to say they too have noticed how they have changed recently. For those for whom my explanation itself sounded partisan, here are examples of how CMS announcements have changed and the language we had to omit:

IN THE NEWS

Staff writer Darcey Trescone, with input from Leading Age, Nevvon, and a prominent West Coast home care provider, has pulled together a useful set of innovative ideas for dealing with the care worker shortage. This is one to print and save, maybe post on a bulletin board. Click below on "Retaining And Growing The Direct Care Workforce."

Our friends at HHAeXchange bring us the next interview in their series "Extraordinary Women in Home Care." Click below to meet Mitze Amoroso of the senior care arm of the Catholic Archdiocese of New York.

Home Health Providers struggle with payment denials, accusations of fraud, waste, and abuse, and sometimes more serious charges. And it all comes down to inaccurate clinical documentation. Read both of attorney Elizabeth Hogue's articles to learn how to protect yourself. Note especially the two court cases where no actual neglect happened to cause a patient injury but only one verdict was not-guilty.

Worth the Trip

There are four important free webinars coming up, all focused on the 2021 Final Rule for Home Health. All of them feature our industry's most knowledgeable experts, such as John Reisinger, CPA, presented by HealthRev Partners; Mike Deck of Healthcare Synergy, and Michael McGowan and Kristi Bajer, brought to you by KanTime. Scroll down to our Upcoming Conferences section to find the ones most relevant to your needs.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Time: 2:00 pm EST

Information and Registration

With small margins in home care it has prompted the question, “Can we collect cash faster?” And what would this do for an agency? One thing we know is margins are small and have become more challenging than ever to for agencies to profit. This doesn’t mean it impossible for agencies to survive; it means a focus on collecting cash faster will be ever so important.

Agency leaders will first need to develop a timeline cadence of when to address claims based on when they were submitted for payment. In addition it will be pertinent to understand their own agency metrics such as DSO (Daily Sales Outstanding) and how they compare to industry standards.

On this webinar you will walk away with how to develop a timeline and your own DSO dashboard for benchmarking. All of these topics will weave into  strategic steps to take toward collecting cash flow faster.
