Volume 10, Number 44 November  17, 2021

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

This week's edition skews a bit toward software developers, cyber-security professionals, and provider agency IT staff. There was a major announcement from the Office of the National Coordinator of Health IT this week, so we feature it, even though it is somewhat on the technical language side. It is important for all health care providers for one obvious reason. Over the last three years, a staggering 93 percent of healthcare organizations experienced a data breach, while 57 percent of healthcare organizations have had more than 5 breaches. Find more details like this by clicking on the headlines below.

We also received some updated figures on COVID-19 vaccine uptake, including boosters (I got mine!). We know how vexing the vaccination mandate for healthcare workers is for you, so we share those new numbers along with our reminder that there is still time to sign up to participate in the cash giveaway from the HRSA Grant being administered by the National Minority Health Association. "Flex For Checks" will continue to pay the agency, the worker, and the vaccinated person for every shot through next May.

Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that over 90,000 COVID-19 deaths since June 2021 likely would have been prevented with vaccinations. See our June, 2021 story announcing the HRSA grant. Or use the search feature on our home page, homecaretechreport.com. First, find "Search For," click on "Advanced," then type each word of Flex For Checks into its own blank field and click "Search Now."

On a half personal, half professional note. Barry Berger just called us to let us know he is retiring and has sold his company, Accredited Home Care, to Aveanna, the agency formed four years ago through the merger of PSA Healthcare and Epic Health Services. Based in the San Fernando Valley and serving all of Southern California, Accredited was the agency that cared for both of my parents until their last days. Best wishes, Barry and Taffy, and a hearty "onward and upward" to the terrific Accredited staff.

Hello Tim,

Thank you for sharing Keith Crownover's legacy. Delta was one of the first computer systems used when I was executive director of a PA VNA. Clay Figard and Keith were my early contacts. It was a pleasure to see them at NAHC and PA Home Care conferences.

I began my home care career as a visiting nurse in 1960 and retired as the director of Abington Home Care in 1999. It is hard to believe my home care/hospice career started 62 years ago. I served on the PA Home Care board during my years as an executive director and was invited to attend PHA's 50th anniversary celebration last week. What a wonderful surprise to hear someone call me by name - it was Keith Crownover at the Stoneridge booth. I too wish Keith well in his new role.

Worth the Trip

NAHC has announced it will try again to hold its Annual Conference and Expo. It is set for St. Louis next October 23-25. Much sooner, of course, is the 2022 Homecare 100, in Scottsdale, AZ, February 6-9. Be sure both of these are on your calendar.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!
