The dedicated people behind the Flex for Checks program have asked me to remind you that their HRSA grant is a six-month program that is set to conclude on November 30, or when all grant funds have been distributed. The grant provides $100 per shot: $50 to the vaccinated person, $25 to the healthcare worker who encourages a patient/client to get the vaccine, and $25 to the agency employing the worker. Your unvaccinated healthcare workers are eligible to receive two of those payments, meaning $75 per shot, when they get their own vaccination. We told you last week about one Florida grant participant who has helped 500 people get vaccinated so far. Maybe you or one of your people could earn $12,500 in grant rewards like she did. Still speaking of COVID-19, it has long been known that clinicians and non-medical caregivers tend to continue to search for the best home health or home care agency in town, even while employed. I talked to some key people and formulated a theory about the connection between recruiting and retention and rewards programs like the one described above from the NMHA. When we make a mistake, we admit it and try to correct it as quickly as possible. When a Champion Falls, All Lose a Little


It was not just Mark, and it was not just MaineHealth Care at Home, or even the Home Care & Hospice Alliance of Maine who lost a life partner, a CEO, and a past president this week. Nationwide, her many, many friends and admirers throughout our healthcare sector are in tears over the loss of one of our most beloved colleagues. I met Donna DeBlois at a Patient Care Technologies user group meeting in Atlanta in 2005. We carved out time at every state and national conference after that to compare notes on where home care and hospice needed to go and how we could help them get there. I know she did that with many of you. Donna was much more than the CEO of one agency, much more than a former NAHC board member. She was a frank, passionate, no-holds-barred home care advocate, not to mention a thorn in the side of anyone who put his own interests above those of patients and their caregivers. And she was a great friend. Perhaps her longtime friend Tim Rogers said it best. "And now, flying high on Sparrows Wings, close to the Angels above…she is pain free, but with her radiant beauty still. Thank you, Donna for being my dear friend and colleague…and the nurse leader you were. The great state of Maine and the Maine Alliance for Home Care & Hospice is forever a hollow place without your effervescence."
