Our first issue of our 22nd year reminds us of our last issues of our first year. In 1999, nearly every Home Care Tech Report issue included at least one article that tried to answer the question, "What is this Home Health PPS thing? What is OASIS? And how are we going to survive?" As our Medicare-oriented readers woke up to PDGM's 30-day episodes last week, the feeling of déjà vu was palpable, at least for those of us who have been around a while. As in 2000, the sun came up, people continued to need care, and nurses and therapists learned to complete an OASIS assessment (eventually).

Never fear. Though this issue, and possibly the next few, need to be devoted to PDGM, we will not ignore you. Be sure to scroll down to this week's headlines. You will be fascinated by a story we found reported by Axios about the surplus of investment capital searching for healthcare startups, and by the announcement from HIPAA-secure texting company QliqSOFT regarding the release of a new patient-engagement tool.

PDGM Revenue Recognition

No sooner does a new Medicare payment system kick in than a controversy arises. What is the proper way to recognize revenue when payment episodes are 30 days and care episodes are 60 days? NAHC is having high-level discussions about it within its Financial Managers committee. Financial consultants such as BKD are working on it too. We have two articles that at least begin to lay out the early questions. Scroll down and click on the headlines to read both. Then, let us know how your agency has decided to handle it.
