Volume 10, Number 8 January  13, 2021

Dear Health Care at Home Colleague,

Well, you certainly convinced me. Recruitment, retention, and that issue of new hires quitting after orientation and training are a major concern, especially for private duty home care agencies. Last week's news about a new, innovative technology based on Applied Cognitive Linguistics was not only the most-read article of the week, but in the top ten over the last six months. And the other nine were all about PDGM and Medicare's COVID relief fund project. If you happened to miss the story, simply scroll down to our "Last Week's Most-Read Article" section and click on the headline, "Four Home Care Agencies Solve Expensive 'Bad Hire' Problem."

IN THIS WEEK'S NEWS

Staff writer Darcey Trescone, RN, BSN, interviews Karen Vance, Managing Consultant with BKD Health Care Group. She examines the 12/21/20 "Medicare Home Health Flexibility Act," which gives Occupational Therapists authority to open home health episodes. Vance emphasized that it is time to stop under-utilizing OTs. Scroll down to click on "It Is Time to Recognize the Value of the Occupational Therapist."

PHI, a national research, advocacy, and workforce innovations organization widely considered the nation's leading expert on the direct care workforce, sent us their new, in-depth report on the Direct Care Workforce. We summarize the report and provide a link to download the complete version. See "PHI Releases In-Depth Report on the Direct Care Workforce," below.

HHAeXchange CEO Greg Strobel surveyed his senior staff and consultants and shared with us their predictions for our industry for 2021. He was quite accurate with the same effort a year ago. Look below for "Homecare Predictions for 2021."

We are watching a sharp increase in the number of technology tools for care coordination, case management, and patient/family engagement. Over the next few issues, we will tell you about some of these tools and how they work. In the meantime, another guest author, home care attorney Elizabeth Hogue, translates a recent JAMA article for home care. The report was aimed at physicians to help them improve patient engagement. Her entry is titled, "How to Connect with Patients."

Vendor Watch

Two news releases caught our attention this week. LifeCare Collective leverages advantages from the synergy of a collective group. The organization has partnered with Rowan Report sponsor HealthRev Partners, to give its members access to coding, billing, and "Live OASIS" services. Dina provides an AI-powered care-at-home platform and network. The Chicago-area company recently raised $7 million in financing. We interview CEO Ashish Shah. For a history of Dina's development, go to our home page at homecaretechreport.comhomecaretechreport.com, click on the "Search For" tool and enter Dina in the search field.

Worth the Trip

Quite a lineup of free webinars this week. Scroll down to our Upcoming Events column to register for "Return to Work Under COVID-19" by Healthcare Synergy, Thursday, January 14, featuring David Mauzey, SVP & General Manager, HealthPointe Solutions. FREE WEBINAR: Can you collect Cash faster?

Sponsored by: Savii

Date: Tuesday, January 12

Time: 2:00 pm EST

Information and Registration

With small margins in home care it has prompted the question, “Can we collect cash faster?” And what would this do for an agency? One thing we know is margins are small and have become more challenging than ever to for agencies to profit. This doesn’t mean it impossible for agencies to survive; it means a focus on collecting cash faster will be ever so important.

Agency leaders will first need to develop a timeline cadence of when to address claims based on when they were submitted for payment. In addition it will be pertinent to understand their own agency metrics such as DSO (Daily Sales Outstanding) and how they compare to industry standards.

On this webinar you will walk away with how to develop a timeline and your own DSO dashboard for benchmarking. All of these topics will weave into  strategic steps to take toward collecting cash flow faster.
