Volume 7, Number 37 September  5, 2018

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

It must be after Labor Day. Traditionalists have put away their white shoes and marketing departments have suddenly resumed sending us news releases. We begin this week by offering a complete copy of the recently-released, updated, Interpretive Guidelines for the 2018 Conditions of Participation. One link to the downloadable PDF is here, the other is on our main web site, http://homecaretechreport.com. Scroll down toward the bottom of the page and look for "Partner News." While you are there, notice that we are constantly adding to this new feature. Take a look at some of the other White Papers we have posted there.

If you are not with a Medicare agency and the CoP IGs are not your cup of tea, we have something for you too. Using the same link above to our home page, look for the Partner News PDF titled "U.S. Home Care Workers: Key Facts." It is a report on a detailed research study conducted by PHI and is packed with information about who these workers are, how they are paid, and why it is so hard to recruit them.

We didn't believe it at first either. If yours is a typical home health agency, you struggle with a list of challenges. High on the list is cash flow, which is dependent on clinical efficiency and the movement of OASIS assessments from the field to QA and on to CMS. If you can relate to this challenge, you must take a look at our lead article this week, aptly titled, "The VNA RAP Miracle."

Last year, the Southwestern Illinois VNA was barely able to get a RAP out the door in 30 days. Today, they average 24 hours. No, that is not a typo. You most certainly want to learn how they did it, and about the twin side effects. One, SIVNA nurses take no work home at night. Two, area nurses are clamoring to work there. Together, those two side effects mean they no longer turn away referrals due to inability to staff a case and their census is way up.

In other news this week: Keep an eye on a small private duty EMR software company called Savii. Founder Michelle Harper decided to sell and a buyer was found that wants to invest generously in the company's growth. We spoke with Kristen Duell about her plans as she steps into her first CEO position.

Vendor Watch offers two big stories this week. Mediware has announced another acquisition, bringing Rock-Pond Solutions under its ever-growing umbrella. Rock-Pond provides data analysis software for the Home IV sector. Amedisys has invested in Medalogix, the Nashville-based data analysis company that has had a longtime relationship with Homecare Homebase.

Lastly, some news of interest for any nurse looking for an opportunity to move up and out. A Colorado home health agency needs to hire a Clinical Manager. Move up to a supervisory position; move out West to experience the joys of clean air, low humidity, and life at 6,000 feet.

Worth the trip
I am off to Columbus next week to speak about home care technology at the Ohio Council of Home Care and Hospice annual meeting. I hope to meet my Ohio readers there. At the end of the month, I will be teaching my online reputation system at the Home Care Association of America annual leadership meeting in Washington DC. The more I interact with Private Duty owners and staff, the more I learn to appreciate the good they do.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Using data from the SHP national database, Chris Attaya, vice president of product strategy, and Zeb Clayton, vice president of client services, will identify the expected winners and losers of the new model. They will share insights around the operational and clinical changes you need to consider to remain a vital organization. The home care and hospice industry is increasingly competitive. The shift from “volume” to “value” means that agencies must increasingly focus on quality outcomes and prove their “worth” to customers and referral sources alike.  Agencies must have a robust quality program in place that identifies, tracks, and trends key metrics against agency goals.  Successful agencies not only have visibility into their current performance, but they continually modify and develop new strategies for improvement, while engaging their clinicians.
