Volume 7, Number 41 September  26, 2018

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Yes, I took a week off. It was the first anniversary of the tragedy I experienced last September and I got away for a few days. Upon my return, I jumped directly into a stack of news and two inspiring conferences that I have to tell you about.

I always learn a lot at the Annual Leadership Conference of the Home Care Association of America. With private duty home care expanding at such a rapid rate, we are all doing as much as we can to keep up with it. I got the chance to attend a presentation by Ginny Kenyon and Anne Tomlinson -- plus a one-on-one interview with Bob Roth -- about next year's rule change that allows private duty providers to bill Medicare Advantage companies for certain patient services. You'll find their insights and clear explanations of the details essential to your planning for the next two years.

The Society of Certified Senior Advisors brought together professionals from home care, law, financial planning and even packing and moving services to discuss the needs of our aging population. This is an organization that I had not been familiar with before but you will find their training and certification program of great interest. They are based in Denver and you can learn more on their web site.

Also at HCAOA, a number of new technologies, or at least new companies with their take on familiar technologies, emerged. Be sure to see our survey of these innovations in the cleverly titled "Have You Seen These New Technologies?" You will learn about a managed, limited debit card you can give to your caregivers for patient-related expenses, a vital sign monitor the size of a Band-Aid, and a new online training system for caregivers. We also met the founder of a calling center for triage you can hire, a billing service that perfects your claims before forwarding them, and an advocate building momentum to win tax incentives for home remodeling for seniors.

An organization called "The Medicare Rights Center" has published two versions of a guide for this year's insurance renewal season, one for you and your team and one to share with patients.

Lastly, in our Vendor Watch column, read about a big announcement coming from Axxess at NAHC's Home Care and Hospice Conference, plus a big win for private duty home care software company AxisCare.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Dallas. I'll be in Booth #1137, way back in the corner. Please drop by. Speaking of booth numbers, please do me a favor. This free news service is only possible because of the generosity of our sponsors. In addition to clicking on their ads here and on the Rowan Report web page, please visit their booths at the NAHC exhibit hall. Let them know you read about them in Tim's newsletter. I would be most grateful. Print this and take it with you:

Medicare Advantage for Private Duty Agencies: Advantage or Disadvantage?
Starting in January, home care can submit claims to Medicare Advantage plans for services provided to their enrolled members. Moving into this world is not as easy as it sounds. Anne Tomlinson and Ginny Kenyon sort it out for you.

Have You Seen These New Technologies?
We thought we had seen it all. We hadn't. This week's HCAOA exhibit hall was an educational experience for us, as they will be for you. These new technologies we found range from patient care to financial management to employee recruitment and retention. We even learned about home remodeling for aging in place.

Using data from the SHP national database, Chris Attaya, vice president of product strategy, and Zeb Clayton, vice president of client services, will identify the expected winners and losers of the new model. They will share insights around the operational and clinical changes you need to consider to remain a vital organization. Time: 1:00 pm CDT

The home care and hospice industry is increasingly competitive. The shift from “volume” to “value” means that agencies must increasingly focus on quality outcomes and prove their “worth” to customers and referral sources alike.  Agencies must have a robust quality program in place that identifies, tracks, and trends key metrics against agency goals.  Successful agencies not only have visibility into their current performance, but they continually modify and develop new strategies for improvement, while engaging their clinicians.
