Volume 4, Number 44 — August  4, 2015

Dear Home Care Colleague,

Two of our advertisers have very special events coming up. This special edition is to let you know about them in time to make arrangements to participate.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 5, ContinuLink is sponsoring a FREE webinar featuring Richard Chesney. Richard is a good friend and the President of Healthcare Market Resources. He has chosen a topic near and dear to my heart, "Home Health and Hospice Survival Test: Four Questions to Ask About Your Agency," the central theme of my own annual seminars.

According to ContinuLink, Rich will address the severe competitive, demographic, and regulatory changes facing the entire healthcare at home market, including hospice. "Do you know what questions to ask to determine your agency's ability to thrive?" he asks. Rich is highly qualified to present this topic. A healthcare executive with substantial experience in post-acute settings, with a particular focus on services delivered in the home, his breadth of experience includes operations, marketing, strategic planning and general management, mostly with Fortune 100 companies. This experience, along with an MBA from MIT, led Rich into the healthcare industry, in which he has been involved for over 20 years.

Register here for this free event. Add it to your calendar for 2:00 pm EDT, Wednesday.

Looking ahead, you will also want to put October 6-8 on your calendar. Relias Learning is hosting "IMPACT NATION," a live event in New Orleans, featuring renowned entrepreneur John Jacobs, co-founder and "Chief Creative Optimist" of the Life is Good clothing company. In addition, to keynotes by Jacobs and by Relias CEO Jim Triandiflou, there will be a track teaching you how to become your own content developer. According to the Impact Nation web site, "During these sessions we’ll share our secrets and best practices for building your own courses and providing custom staff training to your organizations. It will be the best expo on training, education, and workforce development available!"

Thank you for reading to the end of this quick announcement. And thank you for your support of Home Care Technology Report. Keep making a difference!

Immediate and urgent need for Interim Director of Billing (outside of Chicago). They can be based anywhere. We would fly them in on Monday and home on Fridays. They would be compensated well, including travel pay. All expenses are covered. We have someone in there as an interim and she can't be there the weeks of 9/14 and 9/21. We had part time coverage arranged for those weeks, but the client insists on full time.

It is community based services only –no Medicare- mostly Medicaid waiver for non-skilled services. Large Department of 20 FTEs. McKesson is the IT system. This interim position is to provide stability for two weeks while our person is out.

Conflict between hospitals and home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies that receive referrals from hospitals may be intensifying regarding patients' right to freedom of choice. Hospitals say that they comply with all requirements while some post-acute providers maintain the exact opposite. Now post-acute providers are suing hospitals for violations.
  • What exactly are hospitals supposed to do?
  • What do post-acute providers say are common violations?
  • What is an example of a recent lawsuit filed against hospitals for violations?
  • What can hospital discharge planners/case managers do to avoid these types of lawsuits?
  • How can providers help ensure that patients' rights are honored instead of filing court cases against hospitals?
Participate in this teleconference to learn the answers to all of these questions! Extensive handouts will be provided that will also serve as a resource when questions come up in the future.
