Volume 7, Number 46 August  22, 2018

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Summer must be coming to a close. Our industry's news is starting to grow a little busier and meatier. Before it gets so intense there is no room for our non-news, educational pieces, we push to the forefront this week an instructional essay that, though directed specifically to hospices, will be found valuable by all types of business owners, especially those in need of a way to leapfrog their competition. Guest author and marketing consultant Roger McManus, MBA, explains why you must claim your company's online listing. He offers instructions, in great detail, how to do it. In brief, Roger's message is, "if you don't do it, and your competitors do, your referral stream will be profoundly harmed."

In other news this week: Two acquisitions and a partnership. Don't miss this week's Vendor Watch column to learn about another Mediware acquisition, with the hint of one more to follow soon. This time it is in the Home IV software sector. Playmaker sent us a dual announcement. From here on out, they want to be known as "Playmaker Health," part of a company-wide rebranding project to celebrate their expansion across the entire post-acute market. They too are in acquisition mode this week, picking up a provider of market intelligence and data analytics for the post-acute sector.

A partnership has been announced between consulting firm Maxwell Healthcare Associates and a home health and hospice coding, recovery, and appeals company. The two companies stated that their cooperation will facilitate sharing of additional service lines to both entities' clients. Read about all three of these announcements in this week's Vendor Watch column.

There are several important announcement in this week's CMS News column. Two related to hospice HQRP. One explains a new set of numbering rules for your patients' Medicare cards when CMS gradually replaces Social Security numbers. Another gives you all the detail you need to apply to CDC to become a paid Diabetes Prevention Instructor.

Worth the trip

We are off to the "Certified Senior Advisor" conference in Dallas this weekend. After that, we hope to see you at one of our speaking engagements in September. Either at the Ohio Council for Home Care and Hospice, September 11-12, or at the end of the month in DC for the Home Care Association of America Annual Meeting. Another seminar for owners and executives has just joined the calendar. Be sure to read about "Growth Summit (without the pain) for Owners and Executives," October 3-5, in Las Vegas.

Looking forward a few months (but it's not too soon to make your reservations), I will be joining an elite team of attorneys and financial and marketing consultants again next year on the 8th Annual "Compliance Cruise." Current plans are to disembark from Fort Lauderdale on January 13 and combine three full days of intense study with a little R&R. I'll get more information to you as soon as I get it, just in case you want to join the most informative conference on the high seas.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Giving and Getting Referrals from Hospitals

Featuring: Elizabeth E. Hogue, Esq.

Date: Wednesday, May 8
Time: 1:00 - 2:30 pm EDT

Encore date: May 15
Option to purchase CD & handouts

Information and Registration

Referrals from hospitals may be even more important for agencies under the Medicare Program's Patient-Driven Groupings Model (PDGM). Hospitals also remain a major source of referrals for hospices and HME, amid increasing competition. Private duty agencies have a key role to play in the discharge of patients to home and referrals from hospitals are expanding rapidly. All types of providers need to know how to get more referrals from hospitals without breaking the law. And hospital discharge planners/case managers need to know the rules so the referral process remains in compliance!

This teleconference will address crucial questions for both providers and discharge planners, such as:

  • Can home care providers participate in discharge planning meetings?
  • Should home care providers have access to case managers and patients prior to discharge?
  • What do regulations and interpretive guidelines for discharge planning say about giving and getting referrals?
  • How can providers and case managers use Preferred Provider Agreements?

Extensive handouts will be provided, and there will be time for comments, questions and answers.
