Volume 4, Number 44 — July  8, 2015

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

The middle of July! A typically slow news week but we found some notable items. Relias Learning has acquired another online learning company, adding over 300 courses to its library. AHRQ announced new grants of interest to both care providers and tech vendors. An upcoming VNAA conference will feature two CMS executives in an open discussion forum. Then there are the two new CMS proposed rules. We cover the proposed bundled payment plan for care of people who have had joint replacement surgery. The larger one, the 2016 PPS changes, we will analyze more carefully over time.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: I can't believe that Home Care Technology Report, this resource we put together for you in 1999, has been a completely free service for nearly 10 years already. In its early days, we charged $257 for annual subscriptions. Well, you know me by now. I am as dedicated as the next guy to selflessly serving the healthcare at home industry, but I do have two habits to support: a home mortgage and a preference to eat every day. I feed these habits through the generosity of software vendors and other companies whose logos you see displayed on this page and on our web site. All they ask in return is that you take a look at their web sites from time to time, especially when you are searching for a new vendor.

AND WHY NOT? These are the best companies in our industry. Take a quick look:

  • Allscripts has been on the move under its new leadership. Their software for in-home services for healthcare and hospice has always been impressive and constantly improving. Did you know they produced a free "Homecare Survival Guide" to help you through healthcare reform? Click on their ad at the right to download it.

  • Briggs has been providing the industry's most popular forms for longer than most of us can remember. Now you can access their forms electronically through half a dozen other EMR products.

  • CareWatch has been exploding in popularity in the EVV world, thanks to its superior telephony software, its new cell-based EVV system, and its unmatched reputation for customer service.

  • Carosh Compliance Solutions has the most complete, sophisticated, and affordable HIPAA preparedness and compliance system that we have ever seen. They will be starting a series of webinars soon that we strongly support and will be telling you more about soon.

  • Delta Health Technologies told you last week that they have determined that clinicians who use their software are twice as likely to complete documentation in the presence of the patient. They are currently implementing that software for the largest healthcare at home agency in the country.

  • HealthWyse is one of the early SaaS solutions for Medicare providers. It serves both healthcare- and hospice-at-home providers with EMR software, an EVV system, and a fully customizable management dashboard system.
  • Homecare Homebase you may think you know well. But, if you have not clicked on their ad recently and examined their web site, you may not know that they landed Amedisys as a customer, partnered with Forcura and Medalogix, and provided customers with an analysis of the 2016 PPS proposed rule.
  • Procura brings software to the U.S., Canada, and Australia through Procura, ContinuLink, Progresa and Igea. We hear that ContinuLink is selling so quickly, the company is hiring and training new implementation and training staff.

  • Sandata has been providing extremely popular EVV solutions for years and is currently beefing up its EMS solution to include a point-of-care application and bullet-proof ICD-10 readiness for its customers.

  • Soneto, which you previously knew as Stratis Software, is putting wise use to its influx of cash from its new owner, AOD. Long the most popular schedule-centric, private duty software application, it is rapidly perfecting its Medicare EMR.

  • Suncoast Solutions helps hospices to be more efficient. They previewed their new "for nurses, by nurses" version for us at the NHPCO meeting in DC last May and we were quite impressed.

Please check out these excellent companies. And if you talk to them, be sure to let them know you found them on Home Care Technology Report.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Relias Learning Acquires Academy Medical Systems
In a move that company officials hint will not be its last, Relias Learning has added more than 250 new courses to its catalog through the acquisition of Bend, Oregon-based Academy Medical Systems.

CMS Proposes Bundled Payment Plan for Joint Replacement Care
Proposal would reduce costs of rehab for hip and knee replacement surgery, the most common inpatient surgery for Medicare beneficiaries. Public comment period ends on September 8. Read the entire CMS proposal here. Thanks to our friends at Kornetti & Krafft Health Care Solutions for bringing this to our attention.

CMS Officials Set to Speak at VNAA Public Policy Leadership Conference
Deputy Administrator for Medicare and Director of Chronic Care Policy Group will engage in discussions with VNAA members and others in Washington DC, September 16-17.

AHRQ Announces Two New Grants
Actually, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality announced this week that it is going to announce two new initiatives sometime soon that will involve both grant and contract mechanisms. The early warning is to allow prospective applicants "sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects." The initiatives, to disseminate and implement patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) findings through clinical decision support (CDS), may be of interest to software developers more than to healthcare providers. Or perhaps the two working collaboratively.

Last Week's Most-Read Stories:
Some Nurses Chart in the Home Twice as Often as Other Nurses
One of the major problems facing healthcare at home providers is clinical documentation accuracy. Inaccuracy can become extremely expensive but its primary cause is preventable. Clinicians are always more accurate when they complete paperwork in the presence of the patient. Anything that can be done, via policy, encouragement, or providing better software, can help. One software company has determined that its clinical application is part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

Protect Yourself Against Negative Bias in the Online World
It is human nature. Happy patients and customers tell you, unhappy ones go online and tell the world the horrible things you did to them. There are ways to protect yourself from this fact of 21st century life. In part three of his 8-part series on Reputation Management, guest author Roger McManus details the problem. Next week: what you can do about it.

As of this date, approximately 18,150,000 Baby Boomers have become Medicare eligible.

Immediate and urgent need for Interim Director of Billing (outside of Chicago). They can be based anywhere. We would fly them in on Monday and home on Fridays. They would be compensated well, including travel pay. All expenses are covered. We have someone in there as an interim and she can't be there the weeks of 9/14 and 9/21. We had part time coverage arranged for those weeks, but the client insists on full time.

It is community based services only –no Medicare- mostly Medicaid waiver for non-skilled services. Large Department of 20 FTEs. McKesson is the IT system. This interim position is to provide stability for two weeks while our person is out.
