Volume 5, Number 42 — June  8, 2016

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Please join me next Thursday for a webinar hosted by one of our sponsors, Sandata, on the pros and cons of point-of-care software systems. It's free and I promise it will be worth your time. Here is the issue. Point-of-care clinical systems have evolved over the last 20 years but they have not become commodities. There are great ones to choose and there are serious pitfalls to avoid when choosing. I will go into the details of what features you want to demand and which ones -- no matter how attractive; no matter how "affordable" -- will do damage. You can register for this event by clicking here or by clicking on the Sandata ad at the top of the column on the right side of this page.

In This Week's News: By now, everyone has heard about the horrible mistake CMS made this week by starting a prior authorization requirement for healthcare at home patients in five states. Certainly, there is a fraud problem in places like Miami-Dade County, Detroit, and Chicago, but how does punishing everyone help solve that problem? The good agencies will obey the law and their patients will suffer. The criminals operating in those states will find ways to circumvent the law. My 4th grade teacher used to punish the entire class for the sins of one or two but she was one nun trying to manage 50 10-year olds. CMS has hundreds of smart employees. Certainly they could have figured out a way to punish just the crooks, not the patients. How many Medicare beneficiaries will have to die before CMS realizes its mistake?

OK, that is as far as my personal rant goes. I am relying on a press release from the Partnership for Quality Home Healthcare to lay out the full argument. Don't miss  "Partnership Expresses Disappointment..." below.

At its Annual Meeting in April, the VNAA hosted an Interoperability Symposium that I was honored to moderate. I'm asking you to do yourself a favor here. Do not bump up against the word "interoperability" and assume this is a techy article that will bore you to death. Make no mistake, the ability to gracefully exchange patient data with hospitals, physician offices, and ACOs, will be one of the defining characteristics of providers who survive the current challenging healthcare environment. You need to be on top of this issue.

Lastly, we came across three new technology products that have been designed to save you money, streamline your operations, and improve your patient outcomes scores. If you are a hospice suffering with the new NOE fiasco, if you specialize in wound care, or if you are concerned about your hospital readmission record, at least one of these three systems is what you have been looking for. Note: none of them advertises with HCTR. This is as unbiased a recommendation you will ever get from me.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Interoperability Not As Easy As It Looks: The VNAA Vendor Symposium
One of the capabilities that will define surviving private duty and Medicare providers of healthcare at home services will be Interoperability, exchange of patient information with acute care providers and others. As yet, there are no data exchange standards but the conversation has begun. We at HCTR plan to be in the middle of it. Here is the story of how we got involved and why we believe it is so important.
