Volume 7, Number 33 June  6, 2018

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

We are making one final invitation this week to ask you to participate in our survey about your Electronic Medical Record software before we close it. The questions focus on your implementation and training experience and should take you less than 10 minutes to complete. We will be able to bring readers a valuable, educational report as soon as we compile the results. We know that software training must be based on the principles of adult pedagogy but we are not sure that is always the case with home health, home care, and hospice software implementations. We are hoping you will take 10 minutes to enlighten us. Here is the link: survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07ef8hx3kpjf1y442f/start

Has this ever happened to you?

"Hey, Jude, Rita just resigned so you are the new HIPAA Privacy Officer. You need to get certified as quickly as possible. Here's a book. Oh, and, by the way, this is in addition to your regular duties."

Apparently, this scene is not as uncommon as one might think. So much so that one HIPAA consultant organization we hold in high esteem has begun to offer classes that prepare participants to take the Certified Information Privacy Manager exam. My guess is that they are a fun group; they named the course "Privacy Officer Organizational Fundamentals" so they can refer to it as POOF. You can read more about it in this week's lead article, "Poof! Like Magic, You're A Certified Privacy Officer."

In other news: Our telehealth reporter Audrey Kinsella has discovered a nationwide remote video service helping seniors who are addicted to opioids. Personally, I was shocked to learn that the numbers among the elderly are as high as among other age groups. There is a resource of 12 regional Telemedicine Resource Centers you can use and we have listed contact information for all of them. Be sure to read Audrey's report below, "Drug Addiction Among Elders: A Telehealth Solution."

Seattle-based NetMotion has announced the release of an interesting connectivity product that can keep your field staff more compliant with security regulations. There is much more to it than that but it is too complex to describe here so be sure to click on the headline below, "NetMotion Delivers Operational Intelligence Platform for Enterprise Mobility."

CMS made several announcements this week. We put them all into one article, cleverly titled "CMS News." It includes links to the next Home Health Open Door Forum, a list of cities and dates where CMS will conduct basic and intermediate training for Medicare participants, and a teaser of – and links to – a report about how hospitals are improving their efforts to make them less dangerous to patients.

I wish that were all the news this week. However, I have to take one more moment to bid a sad farewell to my friend Rich Chesney. Just before going to press, we heard that the founder and CEO of Healthcare Market Resources succumbed to a heart attack on May 24. His was a brilliant mind, with a deeper understand of the meaning behind regulatory and demographic events than most. He made this newsletter more valuable to its readers by sharing his wisdom with us over the years, usually in topics that, frankly, would have otherwise been over my head. A tremendous benefit to the entire home health industry, he will be greatly missed. Rich leaves behind a wife, two sons, and three grandchildren, plus thousands of grateful home health agency and hospice owners.

P.S. We have learned of a great Colorado non-profit looking for a full time RN to oversee the skilled and unskilled staff of a Medicaid Home and Community Based Services program. Great salary and benefits. Great place to live. View the complete job description here. Qualified candidates may contact "The Independence Center" HR office at 719-411-8181 ext. 118. Or they may send their resume and cover letter to hrresumes@the-ic.org

Have a great week. I hope to see you at "Post Acute 360" in DC, June 25-27. Keep making a difference!

The home care and hospice industry is increasingly competitive. The shift from “volume” to “value” means that agencies must increasingly focus on quality outcomes and prove their “worth” to customers and referral sources alike.  Agencies must have a robust quality program in place that identifies, tracks, and trends key metrics against agency goals.  Successful agencies not only have visibility into their current performance, but they continually modify and develop new strategies for improvement, while engaging their clinicians.
