Volume 5, Number 42 April  6, 2016

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

I hadn't attended the VNAA Annual Meeting for a number of years so I was quite taken last week with the number of attendees and exhibitors and the quality of the meeting's educational sessions. Thanks to some of those sessions, I am finally gaining an understanding of the complex rules and formulae of the Value Based Purchasing demonstration underway in nine states. We will continue to follow the demonstration and report on lessons and challenges that may surface there.

I was privileged to be the discussion leader for one of those sessions. A discussion of Interoperability brought together executives and product managers from 13 different software companies. It turns out the issue is more complex and more difficult to solve than it might appear on the surface but the open conversation did progress toward some solutions, or at least some strategies to try. We will go into detail in next week's issue.

In this week's news: guest authors dominate the landscape in this week's HCTR, helping us bring you some valuable content even though we were away. Telehealth writer Audrey Kinsella looks into systems for keeping people safe when they are homebound and when they are not. Scott Herrmann of Medocity parses the differences between deploying mHealth systems for Baby Boomers and trying to do so for their parents. Marketing consultant Roger McManus brings to bear his experience with turning Facebook pages into sources of education for the purpose of establishing your agency as a local authority.

Lastly, I offer a rundown of my own of three new VNAA exhibitors offering their wares to healthcare at home providers for the first time. They are all quite different from each other and two of the three have unique products I am guessing you have not seen before. Both are for mobile workers, one for safety and the other for productivity while on the road.

One more thing: I always want to make sure you are getting the most value out of our services. Last week I reminded you that you can invite colleagues to subscribe by simply having them send the text HOMECARETECH to the address 22828.

This week, let me confess to you that we are hoarders, at least where our news archives are concerned. We never throw anything away, not since we went electronic in 2006. This matters because it means that 10 of our 17 years of wisdom are available through the search function on our home page at homecaretechreport.com. Click on the button there labeled "Search Articles" and experiment with any key words you like. Every word in every article is indexed and searchable. Newcomers to our corner of the healthcare world have told me this is a great way for them to learn some healthcare at home history and get up to speed in their new job.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

HCTR New Product Review: Firms Bring Safety and Convenience to Field Clinicians
Two concerns of people who work on the road are safety and how to turn a car into an office. We found two new companies at the VNAA meeting last week with thoroughly impressive solutions.

Facebook as a Marketing Strategy for Home Care Agencies
You already know that clinging to rotary phones, fax machines, and Yellow Page ads is more about nostalgia than good business. What about social media? In this first in a five-part series, marketing expert Roger McManus argues in favor of having your own Facebook Business Page.

Connected Care and the Aging Generations
Guest author Scott Herrmann explains how mobile applications will drive patient engagement, perhaps not with the current generation but certainly with the Boomers.

Telehealth: It's Not Just For the Homebound - Part 2
Our telehealth reporter, Audrey Kinsella, has a new web site packed with tips about deploying remote patient monitoring. In this summary, she discusses monitoring for patients who are not homebound and the concept of motivational training for nurses.

When you click on these ads,
you make sure HCTR continues to come to you for free.

During the 3rd Quarter of 2017, web sites of the above advertisers were visited by home care and hospice executives and staff 2425 times.
