Volume 6, Number 28 April  12, 2017

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Springtime means new life and storing the snow shovel until next year, at least here in Colorado. For many of us, it also means a lot more trips to airports as the spring state and national conference season kicks in. I am looking forward to seeing many HCTR readers at the National Leadership Conference in San Diego this coming Wednesday through Friday, sponsored jointly by the VNAA and the Alliance for Home Health Quality and Innovation

Speaking of innovation, we feature a profile this week of a new company with a different idea to help make in-home care services more efficient. You are familiar with startup companies that come up with a great idea for a product or service and work long hours to capture a share of a particular market. This one worked in reverse, finding success with a service completely unrelated to the business model it had original launched.

They almost asked us not to write about too many of the details because it is such a great idea there were afraid it might be easily duplicated. Finally, the CEO and founder told us, "Go ahead. There is plenty of business for everyone." You'll see what we mean when you read our lead story, "Private Duty Agency Helps HHAs Achieve Near-Zero Hospital Readmission Rate." If you are planning to attend the CAHSAH Annual Meeting at the end of this month, you will be able to hear the story first-hand in the presentation by Neil Tantingco.

We reported a few weeks ago about the demise of Home Hero, the California company that was causing consternation among traditional non-medical home care providers until it was forced by wage and hour laws to convert its caregiver from 1099 to W-2 employees. That article struck a nerve with one reader, former Addus CEO Mark Heaney. His position on the situation appears today in our Letters to the Editor section. If you have been impacted in any way by overtime regulations, you need to familiarize yourself with Mark's proposed solution.

Did you know that we keep up a lengthy list of web sites for you? Whenever you are looking for a government site or a state or national association, our list might be faster than a Google search. When you go to our home page after reading this week's articles, hover over the tab "Article Categories" at the top of the page. Then scroll down and click on "Handy Home Health Links." If your organization happens to be listed there, could you do us a favor? Check our link to your web site and let us know if it needs to be updated. editor@homecaretechreport.com  Thank you!

Have a great week. Keep making a difference! I'll see you in San Diego.
