Volume 9, Number 13 March  4, 2020

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

You cannot turn on any broadcast or cable news program or pick up a newspaper this week without reading about the strain of Corona Virus labeled Covid19. We are no different, not because of the momentum but because CMS has published specific recommendations for healthcare providers and a tech company has released a free tool.

However, two of our lead stories this week are aimed at the interests of non-medical, private duty home care providers. Private duty software vendor AlayaCare, through its R&D backbone AlayaLabs, has launched an effort to document and encourage the work of women in technology. Darcey Trescone, RN, interviewed AlayaLabs' head of innovation Naomi Goldapple. Darcey's interview is titled, "AlayaCare Highlights Women in Technology."

Another vendor with a leading private duty software system, MatrixCare (formerly Soneto), announced that it has customized its business intelligence data analysis tool for non-medical providers. We spoke with parent company ResMed's VP for Home Health and Home Care, Navin Gupta about the release of the private duty version of "MyAnalytics." See "MatrixCare Expands Data Analytics Tool to Non-Medical Providers" below.

We also spoke at length this week with the founders of "MassCare," a Florida startup that wants to help develop referral sources and increase census for home care and home health providers. They also speak of research that shows how overlapping skilled and non-medical services helps to prevent hospital readmissions for recently discharged patients. Find our MassCare product review below under "Startup Tech Company Seeks Home Health Partnerships."

Everybody's talking about The Virus

CMS has issued directives for healthcare providers that everyone should read. We reprint their bulletin for your convenience as "CMS Covid19 Recommendations for Healthcare Workers." A tech company we had not heard of before asked us to let you know about their virus management efforts. "MayaMD.AI" has released a free web-based tool to help those potentially exposed to Covid19 — especially clinicians, healthcare support staff, public workers, and airline crews — to quickly access user-relevant guidelines and standardized protocols for responding. When you find this article, be sure to read the sidebar we added. Cybersecurity experts are warning the public about hackers preying on people's fears and redoubling their efforts to get you to click on phishing emails. Be warned!

Our other CMS news ranges from useful to shameful. Click on our second "CMS News" headline to read about their hospice HIS instructions update and about an Atlanta hospice caught admitting inappropriate patients with no terminal diagnoses. They agreed to pay $1.75 million without admitting guilt.

Lots of news this week, with something for everyone. I'll be gathering a lot more next week at the annual HIMSS expo. They just announced the President might make an appearance on Monday afternoon. I'll let you know. Meanwhile, be sure to scroll down this page for info about upcoming free webinars and conferences.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference! (And wash your hands!)

Documentation remains a key requirement for home care providers as the consequences for inadequate documentation become more severe.

  • What can home health agencies do to avoid denials by ZPICs, RACs, etc., for lack of homebound status and reasonable and necessary care?
  • What kind of documentation must home health agencies, hospices, private duty agencies and HME companies maintain regarding gifts to referral sources and payments to physicians who make referrals to them?
  • How can providers avoid an increase in enforcement action in this area?
  • What kinds of documentation problems are private duty agencies facing with regard to recoupments from state Medicaid Programs?
  • What dangers do electronic medical records cause for all types of home health providers?
  • Is it true that if it wasn't documented, it wasn't done?
Gather your staff members to emphasize effective documentation yet again. Real examples of cases involving problematic documentation will be presented. Questions and case examples are welcome, and extensive handouts will be provided for use by staff members.
