Volume 4, Number 44 — March  4, 2015

Dear Home Care Colleague,

Last week, I provided to dozens of software vendors a discount coupon code worth $100 off the registration fee for my April seminar, "Healthcare in Transition." Check with your favorite vendor and ask them to share the code with you. Then, use it when you register to join us in Scottsdale, Arizona, April 13-15 and you will pay $349 instead of $449. Click here or on our ad on the right side of this page to register. Don't get me wrong. The experience will be worth $449 and more. But I have a soft spot for my HCTR subscribers and I would very much like to spend three days with you in Scottsdale. You will leave, according to last year's evaluations, with valuable tools to help your agency thrive through the healthcare reform / ACO / Baby Boomer era.

In this week's news: Guest writer Tamela Buhrke tracked down two home healthcare agency owners who have made names for themselves in the Phoenix area for their innovative approaches to competitiveness, ACO partnerships, lowered hospitalization rates, and payer contracts. Toshiba announces a new platform that provides a secure messaging system on any combination of devices. Kinnser Software announces that it has earned SSAE 16 certification. And we reprint whistle blower Wendell Potter's explanation of how the Supreme Court's next decision about the Affordable Care Act will affect home care providers in 34 states.

Lastly, we want to remind you about our collaborative effort with HIPAA consultant Carosh Compliance to expose you to more sources of training about your privacy and security obligations. Click at their ad below to learn about a series of online seminars.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Healthcare Reform Means Opportunity for the Prepared, Disaster for the Rest
In keeping with the theme of our upcoming Healthcare In Transition conference, guest writer Tamela Buhrke explores the potential opportunities offered by the coming healthcare changes with Kerry Halcomb of KC's Home Health, Bob Roth of Cypress Home Care and David Cole of HHA Exchange Software.

Commentary: Supreme Court Decision Nullifying Subsidies Would Result in Chaos
This week, the Supreme Court is hearing arguments in the case known as King v. Burwell, which argues that the health insurance premium subsidies millions of people are getting in 34 states through the Affordable Care Act are illegal. If the court agrees with the plaintiffs when it votes in a few months, the sudden removal of millions of rate payers could cause a "death spiral" in those 34 states. Former Cigna executive Wendell Potter explained in his blog this week what a death spiral is and why it would be disastrous for healthcare providers in those states.

Toshiba Releases "UCedge" to Promote Secure Communications Across Multiple Device Types
Toshiba's "UCedge"™ creates an electronic communication environment where secure messages can be exchanged on a private network.

Last Week's Most-Read Stories:
Taking Home Telehealth Beyond Vital Signs Produces Patient Outcomes, Increases Agency Revenue
Some believe in remote patient monitoring, some do not. Georgia Brown, COO of Care Cycle in Dallas, has used it to save her company nearly $5 million in legitimately avoided LUPAs, reduced average visits per episide to six, and achieved a 7.8% hospital readmission rate. How? By developing a software system, soon to be available to other home health providers, that gives her nurses a picture of each patient that goes far beyond mere vital signs.
New Study Launched to Document Home Care's Actual Impact on Healthcare Outcomes and Costs
Where is the evidence, they ask, that in-home care services reduce hospital admissions, promote self-management of chronic conditions, and save payers more than they put into the home care system? Are there any studies that prove home care's efficacy? Is there proof that reducing home care spending increases net healthcare costs? Soon, the answer will finally be 'yes.' Harvard Medical School, Right at Home, and ClearCare software have launched a three-year study to definitively identify the savings that accrue to public and private payers when people are cared for at home.

As of this date, approximately 16,764,000 Baby Boomers have become Medicare eligible.

Designing successful bundles without collaboration between inpatient and post-acute (PAC) providers inhibits the cost-savings opportunities that make bundled payment a valuable model for hospitals and health systems. Designing care management incentives and solutions for complex patients requires integration across hospitals, home care, and the extended continuum of provider organizations.

Immediate and urgent need for Interim Director of Billing (outside of Chicago). They can be based anywhere. We would fly them in on Monday and home on Fridays. They would be compensated well, including travel pay. All expenses are covered. We have someone in there as an interim and she can't be there the weeks of 9/14 and 9/21. We had part time coverage arranged for those weeks, but the client insists on full time.

It is community based services only –no Medicare- mostly Medicaid waiver for non-skilled services. Large Department of 20 FTEs. McKesson is the IT system. This interim position is to provide stability for two weeks while our person is out.
