Volume 5, Number 42 March  30, 2016

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Apparently, you had better plan ahead if you will be attending NAHC's March on Washington. We just heard there will be a different kind of march targeting Capitol Hill on the same dates. Tens of thousands of people are planning to walk from the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia to the steps of the Capitol to protest the Supreme Court's "Citizens United" decision and Congress' failure to develop legislation to overturn it. Plans include teach-ins, workshops, non-violent direct action trainings, a big protest march, and a "Rally for Democracy" on the Capitol lawn. There will be speeches, art exhibits and musical performances. As the walk from Philly is expected to take 10 days, many of the protest activities will occur after the NAHC event, when Congress will be in recess anyway.

Interoperability Symposium: I will have to miss the DC event in order to moderate a technology discussion in Miami that week. If you plan to attend the VNAA Annual Meeting, join me Friday morning for what should be an important educational experience. I am partnering with VNAA Executive Director Tracey Moorhead and leading home care tech companies to explore the issues of achieving Interoperability with hospital and physician EMRs. At last count, more than a dozen leading software vendors are sending either CEOs, COOs, product managers, customer care representatives, or other knowledgeable staff to participate in a conversation that will explore all aspects of the issue, both technical and organizational. Here is how you register: http://www.vnaa.org/vnaa-2016.

While you are making travel plans, Lincoln Healthcare Leadership has also asked us to make sure you are aware of their Post-Acute Link conference coming up June 8-10 in Chicago. Click on their banner just above this letter to learn all the details.

Congratulations to Brad Caldwell on his new assignment as Senior VP of Business Development for HEALTHCAREfirst. He is not the only one making a move, however. Change seems to be in the air this spring. We interviewed Scott Herrmann, formerly of Procura, about his new company, Medocity, where he will be directing its move in the direction of our Healthcare at Home space with its care coordination software platform.

And there are big changes afoot at Allscripts as well. Our lead article this week is about a joint venture with Netsmart, which will add some energy to the company's home care and hospice software and referral management systems.

Lastly, a couple of reminders. Subscriptions to this newsletter continue to be free thanks to the support of our advertisers. Show your appreciation by clicking on their ads and examining their offerings to see if they can help your efforts to improve your business and care for your patients. I'll take this opportunity to welcome deVero to our community of supporting advertisers. We'll devote a brief article on them in our next issue, based on our recent visit to their headquarters and a conversation with one of their well-known customers.

You can also show your appreciation for our own efforts by spreading the word about Home Care Technology Report. When you come across that rare individual who has not heard of us yet, tell them how easy it is to get their own free subscription. Simply text HOMECARETECH to 22828 and the next issue will be on its way to them.

Thank you, and have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Conflict between hospitals and home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies that receive referrals from hospitals may be intensifying regarding patients' right to freedom of choice. Hospitals say that they comply with all requirements while some post-acute providers maintain the exact opposite. Now post-acute providers are suing hospitals for violations.
  • What exactly are hospitals supposed to do?
  • What do post-acute providers say are common violations?
  • What is an example of a recent lawsuit filed against hospitals for violations?
  • What can hospital discharge planners/case managers do to avoid these types of lawsuits?
  • How can providers help ensure that patients' rights are honored instead of filing court cases against hospitals?
Participate in this teleconference to learn the answers to all of these questions! Extensive handouts will be provided that will also serve as a resource when questions come up in the future.
