Volume 6, Number 28 March  29, 2017

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Last month at the Homecare 100 conference, I attended a presentation by J. Mark Baiada and his son David. In the context of announcing his impending retirement, and David's appointment to succeed him, Mark related the history of his company, Bayada Home Health Care, from its founding in 1975. I had heard the legends of his passion for caring that sometimes moved him to tears when he spoke of it and assumed that was an exaggeration created by those who had been inspired by his leadership...until I saw it for myself.

I decided then to retell his story for HCTR readers one day soon. He is generous with his time and we spoke at length. So, with the exception of a couple of tech vendor news releases, this week's report is dedicated to our farewell to this unique man. You will be relieved to learn two things. One is that his influence will not be completely lost as he steps into a new role as Board Chair. He is turning day-to-day operations over to a son who fully shares his passion. Secondly, he is the kind of entrepreneur who builds systems that enable a company to operate without him. Bayada's 300+ branches in the U.S., Germany, and India will carry on his vision, encapsulated these past 42 years in what he calls "The Bayada Way: Compassion, Excellence, Reliability."

One preview before you dip into our tribute article. To ensure there will never be an investor or shareholder who will ever be able to water down his ideals, Mark is creating a not-for-profit foundation that will own 80 percent of the business after he retires. "I wanted to make sure it can never be sold and will always be a family business," he told us. Reports estimate he could have sold it for $1.1 billion. You really want to get to know this man.

In other news: DeVero asked us to announce its tenth anniversary celebration so we made the rare decision to run their news release virtually unedited. We usually remove words of self-adulation when vendors send us these releases but we thought we could make an exception for this milestone marked by one of our sponsors.

In addition, HEALTHCAREfirst is announcing a partnership with ABILITY Networks, to offer CMS connectivity and data analytics to its clients.

Worth the trip: We have added contact details for a few more important conferences below. We hope to see you at one of them. The National Leadership Conference is co-sponsored by the VNAA and the Alliance for Home Health Quality and Innovation. San Diego, April 19-21. NHPCO will take place in downtown Washington DC April 30 to May 2. Post-Acute Link is set for June 11-13 in Chicago. We will have more detail on these in our next report.

BREAKING NEWS: Just as we were set to distribute this week's report, we learned that CMS has proposed to delay implementation of the new Home Health Conditions of Participation for six more months, until January 13, 2018. A 60-day comment period begins April 3. Send electronic comments via http://www.regulations.gov. Follow the "submit a comment" instructions and refer to file code CMS-3819-P2. Submit comment by regular mail to: Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Department of Health and Human Services, Attention: CMS-3819-P2, P.O. Box 8010, Baltimore, MD 21255-1850.

Have a great week. In the words we learned from Mark Baiada, "Keep making a difference!"

Mark Baiada's Legacy Will Long Outlive His Retirement Date
In 1975, Joseph Mark Baiada tapped his savings account, leased an office for $125 per month, hired a half-time nurse and a coordinator, and hung out the shingle "RN Home Health Care." On the occasion of his retirement announcement, we take a look at what kind of man could ride that hope and prayer — for 42 years with no investors and no other owners — into a multi-national, billion-dollar enterprise.
