Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

If you are a political news junkie like me, you have been watching as cabinet appointees are questioned, praised, criticized and voted in or out by the Senate. You may even monitor news reports each time a confirmation vote is expected that day. However, even the most addicted news hounds might have missed it when Seema Verma was quietly approved as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on March 13. Plenty of attention went to the vote confirming HHS Secretary Tom Price and to the controversial confirmation of the Amway heir as Secretary of Education or the post-confirmation accusations against the Attorney General. But the vote confirming the nominee to the position that most directly affects most of us was not important enough to merit a headline. You had to look for it.

We looked for it. In fact, we looked beyond the headlines into the details so we could bring you a profile of Ms.Verma, from her college degrees to her work designing a custom Medicaid plan for Indiana that is unlike the plans in any other state. We think you will be able to make some educated guesses about what CMS will become under her direction after learning a little about her track record. I hope you find our profile of Seema Verma useful; it looks as though she will be around for a while.

In this week's news: Our old friend Glen Tullman is doing well since being ousted as Allscripts CEO a little over four years ago. His personal interest in diabetes care led him to form a tech company with a mission to help people manage their condition. He wrote to us this week to let us know about his company closing on a $52.5 million round of investment. Click on the headline below about "Livongo" for the details.

We also interviewed an executive with NetMotion for this week's report. This Seattle-based company develops security and enhanced connectivity products for mobile workers. We spoke with VP John Knopf about the release of "Diagnostics 4.0," a system that diagnoses and reports the exact cause of a connectivity issue, saving time for mobile and IT staff so both can be more productive.

We dusted off a white paper from a couple of years ago because we think it is still timely. Advanced Telehealth Solutions studied the effectiveness of remote patient monitoring for keeping CHF patients out of the hospital. As payers move in the direction of paying for outcomes instead of activities, it is good to remember that there are technology tools you can deploy to get your agency moving in the same direction.

Worth the trip
You will say I am nagging you but I want to mention once again that next month's National Leadership Conference will be an important, if not headline-making, event.
