Volume 7, Number 10 February  28, 2018

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

This week, we bring you only three articles but they are all packed with tips and recommendations from top industry consultants.

Special assignment reporter Darcey Trescone presents part three of her series on how to -- and not to -- implement a new Electronic Medical Record. This week, she brings to the table her expertise in change management, making the case that it is change that your staff resists, not the new software.

OASIS instructor and consultant Michael McGowan has been studying CMS's proposed payment system, coming to be known as HHGM, with its accompanying 30-day episode billing system. Read this one with caution, it is rated R. In this case, R for "Re-imagine your career after half of the nation's HHAs go out of business." In this first segment of a three-part series, he offers a way to cope with the impending requirements once they arrive.

Lastly, I was fortunate to have chosen the right breakout session at last month's Homecare 100 conference. I took notes as Luke James, Chief Strategy Officer for Encompass Home Health and Hospice, described the company's successful strategy to win preferred partnerships with ACOs. I think I have relayed his message accurately, and it is a message well worth your attention. He revealed enough of his secrets to empower you to duplicate the remarkable savings and bonus payments his joint ventures have achieved.

Next week I will be reporting from Las Vegas at the annual HIMSS meeting. I always encounter exciting new technologies there. This year, the emphasis is on interoperability and remote patient monitoring.

Quick reminders: please keep in mind that we are always open to hearing your stories. When you have news to share, or when you accomplished something remarkable with one of your technologies, let us know.

Second reminder: we archive every news story we have published since we went electronic in 2006. If you are new to Healthcare at Home or just needing to do some historical research, remember that we have a powerful Search function right on our home page at http://homecaretechreport.com. You can search for one, two, or three words, not just on article titles. We have indexed 100% of the words in our articles so you can search for any word you can remember or any word you need to research. Try it out. You might enjoy remembering what the news was in 2006.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Manage Change, A Good Implementation Maintains Your Competitive Advantage
Successful software implementation comes from managing change as much as from training how to use the software. Technical consultant Darcey Trescone offers some tips for dealing with change-resistant staff.

It Is Time To Start Planning for HHGM and 30-Day Episodes
Delayed by CMS at the behest of the industry, HHGM was included in an obscure amendment to a budget bill and passed into law on February 9. In a 3-part series beginning this week, guest author Michael McGowan unpacks what this means to HHAs.
