Volume 5, Number 42 — February  17, 2016

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

There is a lot going on this week. The big headline is the acquisition of Brightree by ResMed. See the details in our top story, below. CMS is in the news again for its next idea in how to eliminate perpetrators of fraud from home healthcare. The idea is to make more paperwork for everyone, punishing the good with the bad. That should work, right? The public comment period has opened. Click here to tell them what you think about their idea to require pre-authorization for Medicare home health services.

Fazzi Associates is conducting its fourth National Home Care and Hospice State of the Industry Study and they are asking your help to make the response as large — and therefore as meaningful — as possible. Click here to complete the 10-minute pre-survey to tell Fazzi Associates the questions you think the final survey should explore. It is open to anyone involved with home care and hospice. The results will be made available at no charge to every agency in the country. After you've done that, Bob Fazzi requests that you share the pre-survey URL with others (https://www.research.net/r/Fazzi_Input_Survey) and ask them to complete it. But hurry, this pre-survey closes EOB Wednesday, March 2. Kelly Dwight is available by email if you have any questions: kdwight@fazzi.com.

By now you have heard about the ransomware attack that hit Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital in Los Angeles. Perhaps you wrote it off as "that hospital's problem." Don't! That would be short-sighted, potentially costly. Data kidnappers do not prey exclusively on corporations with deep pockets. They hit people on their home computers and they hit small businesses. Rather than just reprint the story as you read it in your local newspaper or heard it from Lester Holt, we have added some graphic examples of what their phishing lures look like. Some of them are pretty convincing that they are real emails from the FBI, the IRS, or from someone submitting you their résumé. There are many more of these sample graphics available if you search online. We advise you to print and distribute them so your staff knows what they look like and might remember not to click on them.

Even if you are not in one of the nine states in the Value-Based Purchasing demonstration, it is time to begin to prepare for the changes that payment system will bring. Telehealth reporter Audrey Kinsella has found a free guide, published by Advanced Telehealth Solutions. It is not limited to guiding you toward telehealth, but offers instructions on how to begin to prepare your agency for VBP. Her article is entitled "Home Health Value-Based Purchasing: Directions for Participation."

Another resource to bring insights into how VBP will look when it arrives to our sector can be found in the work product of a collaboration of regulators, physicians and insurance industry lobbyists. After reading Audrey's article, be sure to read on to "CMS, MDs, MCOs Begin to Define Quality Standards."

As I said. There is a lot going on this week. I hope you take the time to take advantage of the research we have done for you. As always, send your feedback to editor@homecaretechreport.com. We love to hear from our readers. And I hope to see some of you at the VNAA Annual Meeting, April 6-8, in Miami.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

The home care and hospice industry is increasingly competitive. The shift from “volume” to “value” means that agencies must increasingly focus on quality outcomes and prove their “worth” to customers and referral sources alike.  Agencies must have a robust quality program in place that identifies, tracks, and trends key metrics against agency goals.  Successful agencies not only have visibility into their current performance, but they continually modify and develop new strategies for improvement, while engaging their clinicians.
