Volume 5, Number 42 December  7, 2016

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

Everybody is wondering how healthcare is going to change when the Republicans take control of both houses of Congress and the White House next month. Veteran political watchers are saying any major change will be gradual, following the deliberate process of getting multiple bills signed into law. So rather than fretting over an uncertain and likely distant future, we will keep our focus on what you need to know today and leave it to others to prognosticate.

What you need to know today is that you should sign up right away to join me and a Who's Who of other consultants on the 6th Annual Medicare Compliance Cruise. Spend the week of January 15-22 in the Caribbean with attorneys Liz Pearson and Lucian Bernard, Medicare Consultant Jim Plonsey, Sales and Marketing Trainer Cheryl Peltekis, Financial Planner Patrick Brown and myself. Learn from the experts about current compliance law and the changes coming from the new administration, on the day the new President takes the oath of office. Click here for itinerary and registration information.

If a cruise ship is not your thing, and if you are a Complia client, using Procura, ContinuLink, Igea, SunCoast or Progresa software, you should still put Florida on your calendar. At the annual Complia user group meeting, I will be joined by keynote speakers Michael Burcham, CEO of Narus Health, and Dan Crippen, former Executive Director of the National Governors Association. Join us in Clearwater, February 6-10.

Another thing you need to know today is whether ZPIC investigators are on your doorstep. As their contracts run out, to soon be replaced by the new CMS UPIC fraud and abuse recovery system, they are growing more anxious to maximize the size of their final commission payments. You know the Medicare Conditions of Participation and Conditions of Payment manuals. You know, for the most part, what you have to do to receive and keep claims payments. But do you know who these people are, the individuals hired to investigate your worthiness to care for Medicare beneficiaries?

It turns out they are people, just like you. They hold down jobs and, for the most part, try to do a good job. However, so much of what they do is subjective, it also turns out their mood on any given day impacts their decisions — and their work environment influences their mood. So we thought it might be a good idea to learn a little about that work environment. We went to the source, the investigators themselves, in the place where they are most likely to be open and honest: anonymous online discussion sites. You will be amazed at what we found there.

Lastly, you need to know about some free webinars coming up in the next few days. Click on the banner ad above to register for Kinnser's instructions on CMS's 2017 Final Rule. Click on the PlaymakerCRM ad on the right side of this page to learn "How to be the Top Dog Sales Rep" from Cheryl Peltekis. And scroll down to the bottom of this page to our listing of upcoming conference and webinars for more, including "Caring for the Caregiver: What Managers Need to Know to Prevent Burnout," presented by Relias Learning.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

The home care and hospice industry is increasingly competitive. The shift from “volume” to “value” means that agencies must increasingly focus on quality outcomes and prove their “worth” to customers and referral sources alike.  Agencies must have a robust quality program in place that identifies, tracks, and trends key metrics against agency goals.  Successful agencies not only have visibility into their current performance, but they continually modify and develop new strategies for improvement, while engaging their clinicians.
