Volume 4, Number 44 December  30, 2015

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

It was not front-page news so I hope you didn't miss it. President Obama has just signed into law a bill that extends the Work Opportunity Tax Credit for another five years. WOTC has always meant generous hiring incentives for employers but this latest extension of the 2009 law comes with an additional bonus. If you act quickly, you can apply for $2,400 or more for every new hire of 2015. The only restriction is that the employee had to be paid for at least 90 days. Normally, you can only go back six months to apply for a credit.

This is important. Some home healthcare and hospice companies that already take advantage of this law have been receiving checks from the government in the high six figure range every year.

Why such generosity?
When the unemployment rate began to climb into double digits in 2008, Congress created this incentive for employers, reasoning that a tax credit for every new hire would be cheaper than long-term unemployment compensation. As the economy has slowly improved since 2009, Congress and the President have agreed on one- or two-year extensions. This month's 5-year renewal, with its 12-month look-back, therefore, is big news. Now is the time for all for-profit employers -- home care providers, hospices, technology companies, consultants, everyone -- to fill out the forms and request their share.

The smallest credit you may receive is $2,400 but it can shoot as high as $9,600 if you hire a veteran or an ex-felon or take someone off food stamps. Do the math. If you took on ten or twenty people who remained with you for 90 days or more in 2015, a little paperwork could add substantially to your bottom line.

The truth is, however, it requires more than just a little paperwork. It can be complicated and take some time. But there is help. We have found a service that will do it for you. They take a small percentage but only after you receive your government check. No upfront fee at all. Take a look below at the background information and resources, including a link to a tax credit calculator, that we have posted in lieu of news articles this week. It could be the best news you have gotten this year.

One more thing: I hope you are planning to join me in Orlando, January 28-29, for the Home Care Sales & Marketing Society Executive Summit. For-profit or not, Medicare/Medicaid or Private Duty, setting yourself apart from the competition will be more critical in 2016 than ever before. Come to Florida in January to be inspired by healthcare at home's marketing experts! Register here but be sure to use the exclusive HCTR subscriber discount code, HCTECH, to get 15% off your admission fee.

Have a great week, a happy New Year holiday, and a terrific 2016! Keep making a difference!
