Volume 8, Number 40 November  6, 2019

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

On a week where the big news is about CMS publishing its final PDGM rule, we nevertheless found two stories that will resonate with non-medical home care providers. I also want to point out that there are a number of workshops and webinars coming up, most of them about PDGM. Scroll down to the bottom of this page to read the list.

For Home Care

If your field staff uses smart phones to record patient information, visits, and shifts, do you have company policies about apps they can and cannot download onto their phones? The incidents of malware infestation are increasing, especially in Android phones. We have specific instructions from a security expert. Follow his 4-step plan and you will decrease the chance of some offshore hacker gaining access to your network through one of your employees' phones. Scroll down and click on "Four Ways to Avoid Malware on Android Phones."

Dr. Bill Thomas, a gerontologist, spent four years traveling the country, interviewing elderly people. We heard him speak a few weeks ago and tried to remember as much as we could from his presentation. He is not only an inspiration, but he delivered insights into what elders think about healthcare, loneliness, who should decide where they live, and a dozen more topics. Meet Dr. Thomas in "Gerontologist Offers New Insights Into Aging."

For Home Health

On Friday, CMS will release its final rule for the 2020 home health payment system in the Federal Register. Looking at a draft copy, the only surprise we saw is the change in the percentage rate reduction for CMS's so-called "behavioral adjustment." It was reduced from 8.01% to 4.36%. We asked NAHC president Bill Dombi to weigh in on the change and juxtaposed his comment with the CMS response to the many comments it received from the public on the controversial move. Scroll down and click on "PDGM Final Rule Released, With One Surprise."

Preparing for any payment system change creates stress. A change as big as PDGM creates more than its share. Many home health agencies respond to the message that they must improve productivity and efficiency by saying, "We've already been doing that. How can we economize more?" We called a guest writer to help answer that question. Michael McGowan is a former CMS OASIS coordinator and the developer of an OASIS assessment system that has been getting nurses home at 5:00 with no paperwork, no charting to do. He describes his system in "Will Your Care Planning System Carry You Through PDGM?"

Worth the Trip

As you read this, I'll be on my way to Albuquerque. I hope to see friends and readers from the New Mexico Association for Home & Hospice Care. I have the privilege of moderating a panel discussion of experts on the subject of interoperability. We will focus on the advantages of joining a Healthcare Information Exchange. Next week, I will be in Las Vegas, talking about my system of improving a company's online visibility. We have a major software upgrade to demonstrate at the Private Duty Conference conducted by Decision Health.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

PDGM Final Rule Released, With One Surprise
NAHC wins 50% reduction of behavior adjustment rate. CMS does not back down on belief in its underlying rationale.

Gerontologist Offers New Insights Into Aging
After a four-year sabbatical, during which he interviewed older people in hundreds of U.S. cities, gerontologist Dr. Bill Thomas came home with an entirely new perspective on aging and what older people really want. His findings will change your outlook on caring.

Four Ways to Avoid Malware on Android Phones
Downloading the wrong app can install malware on your phone. From there it can get into your company's servers. Here are protective steps you should take.

Will Your Care Planning System Carry You Through PDGM?
A former CMS OASIS coordinator reflects on the impact PDGM will have on HHAs that do not adapt. He ends with one powerful way to create the necessary system efficiencies.
