Volume 4, Number 44 — November  4, 2015

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

One would think we would grow accustomed to the general trend by now but the specific announcements of each acquisition always comes as a surprise. Of course, Relias Learning has been making a habit of acquiring other online education companies so their October 27 announcement that they bought RediLearning could be taken in stride. But last week we learned that Kinnser Software purchased PPS Plus and that did raise an eyebrow or two (See both stories below).

After some reflection, it does seem like a good fit. Kinnser offers Medicare EMR software for HHAs and hospices and last year acquired ADLware to add private duty. PPS Plus provides clinical analysis and benchmarking services for Medicare providers, plus fields a crack team of coding and compliance educators. Together, they say, they will inspire each other toward more innovations. We can't wait to see exactly what that means.

We were also happy to hear that John Shinn and company will remain intact, remain in Biloxi, and keep the PPS Plus name alive. What will be interesting to watch will be the reaction of Kinnser's competitors. PPS Plus has integrations with a number of EMR systems and also plays well with non-integrated systems. The joint press release says those relationships will continue unfettered, which would be the ideal outcome for all of their customers.

Finally, just as this issue was about to be wrapped up in a bow and sent out, we received news that one of Ohio's leading HHAs, Home Care by Black Stone, was acquired on November 4 by Almost Family. Black Stone's $29 million private duty and $21 million skilled nursing revenue will bring Almost Family's Ohio revenue estimates to over $120 million annually. Almost Family operates in Ohio, Florida and twelve other states. We will speak with Black Stone CEO David Tramontana next week and find out if this development will have any effect on their ongoing Allscripts implementation.

Lifting our gaze beyond the inner world of transactions, we notice that CMS has been busy. Everyone else has been analyzing their final rule for HHAs for 2016 so we thought we would focus on two other rules, lest they be overlooked in the angst over reimbursement developments. We reprint Elizabeth Hogue's study of new discharge planning requirements that will soon appear as a new condition of participation. You thought getting physicians to sign face-to-face documents was a pain. Wait until you are required to sit down with them and work out your joint responsibilities for how you are both going to continue to take care of your patients after they are no longer your patients.

CMS has also embarked on a project to reduce hospital readmission from post-acute care. The new measures will have an impact on all HHAs but the public comment period is only two weeks long, ending on November 16. We have a brief description and a link to the details and the comment address.

Next week: We have noticed a trend in clinical software. Last week at the NAHC meeting in Nashville, we examined two tablet-based point-of-care systems that signal a generational leap in technology, compliance, and ease-of-use. Brightree and HEALTHCAREfirst join products such as Delta's Crescendo and others to put clinicians in charge of how clinical software is designed. We will try to figure out what these innovations signify for the direction SaaS point-of-care is going.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!
