Volume 5, Number 42 November  30, 2016

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

We now have names for both of the rulemakers who will have an impact on all of us, whether we deal with Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance payers. HHS-Secretary designate Tom Price, MD, is fairly well known, especially to his Georgia constituents. But the President-elect's just-announced choice for CMS Administrator is a stranger to everyone outside of Indiana. We put together a profile of Seema Verma's credentials and history, from her Masters of Public Health degree at Johns Hopkins to the formation of her own healthcare consulting firm. She is highly qualified, energetically anti-ACA, and likely to be confirmed by the Senate. Get to know her. Click on our lead story, below.

In this week's news: Telehealth reporter Audrey Kinsella files her second report from Partners Health's Connected Health Symposium. She encountered an innovative medication management device. More importantly, she talks about a convincing look into the future by several experts who say Medicare's homebound requirement is not only obsolete but also interferes with people who want to adopt a healthy lifestyle in spite of their chronic conditions.

Epic is in the news. For the first time, a California, standalone, not-for-profit home health and hospice provider has implemented the controversial home health EMR. According to Epic rules, they could not install it directly. Pathways Home Health and Hospice, however, has a close affiliation with a local hospital. They will piggyback on that Epic client's "instance" of the software.

A gift from across the pond! A London home health organization has produced "Dementia: Through Their Eyes," a free, 15-page guide on how to deliver person-centered care to people whose lives have been affected by dementia. Not only produced it but want you to download it and, if you like, distribute it freely to patients and families. (All they have to do is get used to reading sentences such as, "A full-colour guide for organisations desiring to develop patient-centred practises for carers.")

More help for CMS version 2017. At least two of our advertisers are offering free webinars to teach you about the 2017 HHPPS final rule. For the on-demand version from Kinnser, click the banner ad above this letter. For the HEALTHCAREfirst webinar, click the headline here or below, "More Help Unpacking HHPPS 2017 Final Rule"

There is also still time to register for "Increasing Sales Effectiveness with HME Market Intelligence Data" with PlaymakerCRM's Jason Dillon. Hurry though. It is set for November 30.

Refresher Course: How to use our web site.

  1. When you click on a headline below, we direct you to one of eight Category Pages on our web site, http://HomeCareTechReport.com, where that article lives. We arrange our articles topically for your convenience. We assume, if you are interested in that story, you might want to see other recent stories we have posted on the same topic. Simply click on the headline of the story you wanted to read from this week's issue.
  2. After reading that story and possibly others from that Category Page, you may want to see the other newest news items from this week's issue. Or, you may want to go directly to a different Category Page. To do this, use the tabs across the top. First, hover over "Article Categories." A dropdown list will appear. Click on "This Week's Top Stories" or on another Category Page.
  3. If you remember a past article and want to find it, or if you are researching a particular topic and want to see everything we have ever written about it, use our search engine, found on the home page and on every Category Page. First, hover again over the tabs but this time click on "Article Categories" itself. Now you are on our home page. Near the middle of the page is the "Search Articles" button. Click on it and enter up to three search words and we will show you every article since 2005 that includes those words anywhere in the title or text, in a Boolean "and" search. NOTE: each category page also has its own search function. Select the "this category" radio button to focus your search on articles within that category.
  4. We love the fact that so many of you tell us you forward your weekly issue to your colleagues. Remember, though, that HCTR subscriptions are free. So save yourself all that extra work of forwarding issues or copying and pasting article URLs every week. Tell your friends to click here: http://homecaretechreport.com/subscribe.asp or to subscribe with their phone by texting the word HOMECARETECH to the address 28828.

Thank you for being an HCTR subscriber! Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Conflict between hospitals and home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies that receive referrals from hospitals may be intensifying regarding patients' right to freedom of choice. Hospitals say that they comply with all requirements while some post-acute providers maintain the exact opposite. Now post-acute providers are suing hospitals for violations.
  • What exactly are hospitals supposed to do?
  • What do post-acute providers say are common violations?
  • What is an example of a recent lawsuit filed against hospitals for violations?
  • What can hospital discharge planners/case managers do to avoid these types of lawsuits?
  • How can providers help ensure that patients' rights are honored instead of filing court cases against hospitals?
Participate in this teleconference to learn the answers to all of these questions! Extensive handouts will be provided that will also serve as a resource when questions come up in the future.
