Volume 7, Number 46 October  3, 2018

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

I hope this week's issue gets to your inbox before the NAHC Conference and Trade Show. We are heavy with news for Medicare providers this week. To my Private Duty friends, don't worry, after we get through this conference we will get back to an even balance between news for medical and non-medical providers. There was tremendous in our exploration of the pros and cons of Medicare Advantage for private duty providers and I am pleased to let you know we will continue with articles like that one.

If you are already packing for your trip to Dallas, I hope you will take a minute to read our lead article this week. It is an opinion piece by a writer whose opinions are based on 40 years of experience attending and producing trade shows. You will get more out of your three days at the NAHC meeting if you print and take with you on the plane Roger McManus' "How A True Entrepreneur Attends A Trade Show."

Also in this week's news: Our longtime sponsor Delta Health Technologies has a major pre-NAHC announcement. You will want to visit them in booth #501 and take a look at CrescendoConnect, an integrated communication system that includes EVV and keeps your staff in touch with patients, their physicians, and their families. Take a look at the details in "New Delta App Facilitates Care Coordination."

Three other new technologies caught our eye this week. If you work with persons with COPD or with opioid addictions, read one or both of our stories about developments on the technology and the legal front. Congress has passed a bi-partisan bill that removes the restriction on using Medicaid funds to help people struggling with addiction. In the other article, a four-year study of CMS data has verified the benefits of in-home, non-invasive ventilation for COPD patients with Chronic Respiratory Failure.

Any Epic users out there? Be sure to take a look at the announcement from Yorktel about their new two-way video telehealth system that integrates with Epic's patient portal.

Safe travels to all 900 of you who will attend. I look forward to seeing you at the Gaylord. The Rowan Report team and I will be in booth #1137.

Have a great week. Keep making a difference!

Last Week's Most-Read Stories:
Medicare Advantage for Private Duty Agencies: Advantage or Disadvantage?
Starting in January, home care can submit claims to Medicare Advantage plans for services provided to their enrolled members. Moving into this world is not as easy as it sounds. Anne Tomlinson and Ginny Kenyon sort it out for you.

Have You Seen These New Technologies?
We thought we had seen it all. We hadn't. This week's HCAOA exhibit hall was an educational experience for us, as they will be for you. These new technologies we found range from patient care to financial management to employee recruitment and retention. We even learned about home remodeling for aging in place.

As of this date, approximately 31,163,000 Baby Boomers have become Medicare eligible.

Giving and Getting Referrals from Hospitals

Featuring: Elizabeth E. Hogue, Esq.

Date: Wednesday, May 8
Time: 1:00 - 2:30 pm EDT

Encore date: May 15
Option to purchase CD & handouts

Information and Registration

Referrals from hospitals may be even more important for agencies under the Medicare Program's Patient-Driven Groupings Model (PDGM). Hospitals also remain a major source of referrals for hospices and HME, amid increasing competition. Private duty agencies have a key role to play in the discharge of patients to home and referrals from hospitals are expanding rapidly. All types of providers need to know how to get more referrals from hospitals without breaking the law. And hospital discharge planners/case managers need to know the rules so the referral process remains in compliance!

This teleconference will address crucial questions for both providers and discharge planners, such as:

  • Can home care providers participate in discharge planning meetings?
  • Should home care providers have access to case managers and patients prior to discharge?
  • What do regulations and interpretive guidelines for discharge planning say about giving and getting referrals?
  • How can providers and case managers use Preferred Provider Agreements?

Extensive handouts will be provided, and there will be time for comments, questions and answers.
