Volume 4, Number 44 October  21, 2015

Dear Healthcare at Home Colleague,

We have something for everyone this week. Medicare providers will want to read about MedPAC's first meeting since its summer hiatus, and first under its new chairperson. Clinicians will benefit from Tina Marrelli's excellent guidance for building care plans from assessments and building visit documents from care plans. And sales professionals from both private duty and skilled nursing healthcare at home providers will gain from the second in our series of articles promoting the importance of using data on the front lines of the sales process.

This would also be a good time to point out some upcoming conferences where we will either be attending, delivering keynote addresses, or simply believe in enough to encourage you to thin about attending.

  • I was just invited to speak at the Executive Leadership Summit, put on by the Home Care Sales & Marketing Society, January 28 & 29 in Orlando. PLUS, they have graciously offered a 15% discount to HCTR readers. Simply click the link above and register with the code "HCTECH." Other speakers include Liz Pearson, Jim Plonsey and Michael Giudicissi.

  • Next month, I am kicking off a day-long Technology Symposium for the Ohio Council on Home Care and Hospice, November 17 in Columbus. No HCTR discount, but it is only $159 for OCHCH members and I am bringing some great insights into all the news technologies you could be using. There will also be a technology showcase and talks on the Ohio HIE, CliniSync, and care coordination technologies.
  • Looking further ahead, a private conference organizer has created the "Home Healthcare Leaders' Summit," March 3-4 in Los Angeles. Click on their banner ad below for more information.
  • The ATA Annual Meeting next near is in Minneapolis in May. More on that later.

I would also like draw your attention to our new and returning advertisers. These are the people who make this entire enterprise possible so I want to encourage you again to peruse their display ads, here and on the HCTR web site, and click on the ones you want to learn more about.

Consolo Services is a top-notch hospice software developer based in Lexington, Kentucky. Their SaaS software emphasizes HIPAA and regulatory compliance and Revenue Cycle Management. They will be in Booth 841 at the Gaylord.

HEALTHCAREfirst, based in Springfield, Missouri, returns to these pages after a brief hiatus, during which all they did was acquire Deyta Analytics. See this week's interview with their National Project Manager to learn more about how their data can help your agency. And click on their ad for a preview of what they are excited to unveil in Nashville this week.

Have a great week. I hope to see you in Nashville, where we will all celebrate making a difference!

Congress Slams CMS Over 2016 Home Health Cuts
On September 18, 133 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives, from both sides of the aisle, delivered a letter to CMS Acting Administrator Andy Slavitt expressing their deep concern with proposed Medicare home health funding cuts. The Care Plan and Documentation: Practical Application of the Fundamentals
Tina Marrelli, who was the editor of Home Health Nurse for eight years, has graciously allowed us to reprint one of her most popular and widely-read instructional guides for healthcare at home clinicians.

Former Amplicare Thriving As "Deyta Analytics" Under HEALTHCAREfirst
Our ongoing effort to point out the importance of using data to support home healthcare sales and marketing takes us this week to an interview with Deyta, a HEALTHCAREfirst company.

Conflict between hospitals and home health agencies, private duty agencies, hospices and HME companies that receive referrals from hospitals may be intensifying regarding patients' right to freedom of choice. Hospitals say that they comply with all requirements while some post-acute providers maintain the exact opposite. Now post-acute providers are suing hospitals for violations.
  • What exactly are hospitals supposed to do?
  • What do post-acute providers say are common violations?
  • What is an example of a recent lawsuit filed against hospitals for violations?
  • What can hospital discharge planners/case managers do to avoid these types of lawsuits?
  • How can providers help ensure that patients' rights are honored instead of filing court cases against hospitals?
Participate in this teleconference to learn the answers to all of these questions! Extensive handouts will be provided that will also serve as a resource when questions come up in the future.

Managed Care Insights and Strategies for Post-Acute Partners

Presented by: Netsmart/DeVero
Wednesday, July 11
2:00 p.m. Eastern
Registration

According to a recent MedPAC report, enrollment in managed care programs grew 8% from 2016 to 2017, accounting for nearly 32% of all Medicare beneficiaries, with enrollment projected to grow even higher in 2018. With the rapid growth in managed care plans, the organizations managing these contracts are looking to narrow their network of post-acute providers, creating smaller networks of high-value preferred partners.

To help post-acute providers develop effective managed care strategies, we invited Stacey Youcis, senior vice president of service lines and population health at Lancaster General Health to discuss what they look for in an ideal post-acute partner. AJ Peterson, vice president of interoperability at Netsmart, will join the conversation to discuss technology strategies post-acute providers should consider when positioning to their managed care partners.

Key Takeaways:

  • Insights from a managed care organization
    • Current state of managed care programs
    • Ideal characteristics of a post-acute partner
    • Future of managed care programs
  • Strategies to participate in managed care
    • Understanding risk
    • Technology solutions to facilitate participation
    • Integrating into the broader ecosystem of care
